Few people can refute the influence of music on society. Country Music Comin' Home gives an overview of the Country-music industry and its return to traditional family and moral values. Author James C. Hefley recounts the history and the people that have made Country music into a worldwide phenomenon. From Jimmie Rogers to Randy Travis, from The Wabash Cannonball; to Forever and Ever, Amen, from Nashville to Branson. Hefley illustrates how Country music has permeated society for generations. Hefley maintains that the heart of traditional Country music lies in the simple, life-sustaining faith of the people. Born in choir lofts and town halls across rural America, Country music is part of our national heritage, he writes. In these pages, readers will find the tears and the talents, the tragedies and triumphs of the stars who are bringing Country music back full circle to speak to people's simple faith.

Oxford Picture Dictionary: English/Brazilian Portuguese Review

Oxford Picture Dictionary: English/Brazilian Portuguese

I think that the most important facet to keep in mind when considering this book is that it is clearly designed for Brazilian Portuguese speakers to learn English and not so much the other way around. As you can see from "Looking Inside" the book there are great pictures with the translations included, and as another reviewer pointed out, the book will give you the names for many objects which you might not get in another dictionary. HOWEVER, the pronunciation guides are for the English words and there is no pronunciation guide for the Portuguese words! This made it impossible for me, as a relatively new Brazilian Portuguese speaker, to figure out how to pronounce many of the Portuguese words. Furthermore, all of the learning activities, including stories to translate, are in English. Ie., "Practice spelling the days of the week. Monday: M-O-N-D-A-Y" It seems like other native English speakers found this book helpful but I just found it maddening.

This was not a very good guidebook. The directions were not always accurate and the maps (a very important part of a guide book) were not very good. The book is poorly organized, so that you are constantly having to page through to find information.

Organizing Plain and Simple: A Ready Reference Guide With Hundreds Of Solutions to Your Everyday Clutter Challenges Review

Organizing Plain and Simple: A Ready Reference Guide With Hundreds Of Solutions to Your Everyday Clutter Challenges
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased several books about organizing and getting rid of clutter, and they have all had some good suggestions. However, I never managed to apply the principles in anything except a half-hearted and short-term manner. Thus, I ended up with spaces that had been partially cleared and organized, only to revert to their former clutter and chaos after a few months.
This was no one's fault but my own, of course, but with Smallin's book, it didn't happen that way. She is able to present information and ideas that make sense, but she manages to do it in a way that builds your motivation to actually try it and to stick with it. I guess the best way of putting it is that I never felt overwhelmed, even when things looked very chaotic (as they always do at some point in a re-organization project).
The book is extremely well-suited to reading short sections that will allow you to get started right away. Then, if you need a break from the work itself, or need more suggestions, you can go back to it. Smallin also includes multiple suggestions from other professional organizers, which is very helpful because it gives you more options.
I'm almost finished with a two-week de-cluttering and organization project. In the past, I never could have gone that long without giving up and throwing it all back where it came from. But this time, I kept going back to Smallin's book, and she helped keep me on track. I was even able to use suggestions from books I had read before, such as not buying new storage cases until you have actually done the organizing and know what you need to store.
A major re-organization project is something like a weight-loss regime. You can try to do it the fast and easy way, but it won't last. Or, you can do it slowly and patiently, refining and modifying your plan as you see how it evolves. That's my goal, and with Smallin's book as my guide, I'm confident that it will be possible.

An excellent presentation of 19th century Paris and the music of Offenbach. This is my only book on the topic so no comparisons are possible

Siegfried Kracauer's biography of the composer Jacques Offenbach is aremarkable work of social and cultural history. First published in German in 1937and in English translation in 1938, the book uses the life and work of Offenbach asa focal point for a broad and penetrating portrayal of Second Empire Paris.Offenbach's immensely popular operettas have long been seen as part of the largerhistorical amnesia and escapism that pervaded Paris in the aftermath of 1848. ButKracauer insists that Offenbach's productions must be understood as more thanglittering distractions. The fantasy realms of such operettas as La Belle Hélènewere as one with the unreality of Napoleon III's imperial masquerade, but they alsomade a mockery of the pomp and pretense surrounding the apparatuses of power. At thesame time, Offenbach's dreamworlds were embedded with a layer of utopian contentthat can be seen as an indictment of the fraudulence and corruption of the times. This edition includes Kracauer's preface to the original German edition, translatedinto English for the first time, and a critical foreword by Gertrud Koch.

Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill : A Call to Action Against TV, Movie and Video Game Violence Review

Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill : A Call to Action Against TV, Movie and Video Game Violence
Average Reviews:

As a former reporter, I'm probably conditioned to be skeptical of claims that media violence is a problem. I was skeptical until I heard Colonel Grossman, then read his book. There is no doubt in my mind that Grossman is substantially right in his assertions. I now work for Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan, who, after consulting with Grossman, successfully urged at least two national chains, Sears and Montgomery Ward, to stop selling violent video games to youngsters. The immersion of our youngsters in violent imagery is a much bigger problem than our society acknowledges and promises to grow as an issue of public concern in the years to come.

There is perhaps no bigger or more important issue in America at present than youth violence. Jonesboro; Paducah; Pearl, Mississippi; Stamps, Arkansas; Conyers, Georgia; and, of course, Littleton, Colorado. We know them all too well, and for all the wrong reasons: kids, some as young as eleven years old, taking up arms and, with deadly, frightening accuracy, murdering anyone in their paths. What is going on? According to the authors of Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill, there is blame to be laid right at the feet of the makers of violent video games (called "murder trainers" by one expert), the TV networks, and the Hollywood movie studios--the people responsible for the fact that children witness literally thousands of violent images a day.Authors Lt. Col. Dave Grossman and Gloria DeGaetano offer incontrovertible evidence, much of it based on recent major scientific studies and empirical research, that movies, TV, and video games are not just conditioning children to be violent--and unaware of the consequences of that violence--but are teaching the very mechanics of killing. Their book is a much-needed call to action for every parent, teacher, and citizen to help our children and stop the wave of killing and violence gripping America's youth. And, most important, it is a blueprint for us all on how that can be achieved. In Paducah, Kentucky, Michael Carneal, a fourteen-year-old boy who stole a gun from a neighbor's house, brought it to school and fired eight shots at a student prayer group as they were breaking up. Prior to this event, he had never shot a real gun before. Of the eight shots he fired, he had eight hits on eight different kids. Five were head shots, the other three upper torso. The result was three dead, one paralyzed for life. The FBI says that the average, experienced, qualified law enforcement officer, in the average shootout, at an average range of seven yards, hits with less than one bullet in five. How does a child acquire such killing ability? What would lead him to go out and commit such a horrific act?

The Art of Selling to the Affluent: How to Attract, Service, and Retain Wealthy Customers & Clients for Life Review

The Art of Selling to the Affluent: How to Attract, Service, and Retain Wealthy Customers and Clients for Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If I were to follow the rules of a savvy, demanding reader, as suggested in the book, "How to Read a Book," I would have casually read this book, without trying to absorb as much as I can; and opted for the second read to be when I choose to be "one with the author," and act like we are truly havng a conversation.
But this 215-page book has more information in it that anybody, or at least myself could expect, that there's no way I would lightly read it. Besides writing throughout the margins, I took t least 8 full pages of copious notes on this first read.
And I am sure that I not only will re-read this book, I will become one with the affluent, as a direct result of applying the lessons in this book.
Here's some of the many quotes that I appreciated:
"If you or your company is targeting major purchase decision makers, regardless of the products or services involved, your income depends upon your ability to get in sync with the major decision-making process of your ideal affluent clientele."
"When selling to the affluent, you don't simply manage the sale; you manage the relationship."
"Offering the lowest price has the least influence on whether the affluent will conduct future business with you."
"Face-to-face communication is .. the richest medium of communication possible. It engages all five senses and includes everything about your appearance, mannerisms, and speech matters."
"...move beyond believing that the affluent are bigger than life or that you need them a lot more than they need you. The relationship you seek is one where you need them and they need you."
"It has been said that,'You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.'"
"There's an old saying that 'price is only a consideration in the absence of value.'"
"Solving a client problem is obvious. Resolve it quickly and to the client's satisfaction, and it directly impacts repeat business and referrals."
There are three elements in this book that I was surprised by:
1. Although the Ritz-Carlton Service credo was mentioned many times, as the standard by which the affluent make their purchases, I had to surf the net to find out what that credo actually says. I was surprised that the credo was not as in the chapter that discusses how to design your own business credo.
2. Perhaps because this book was published in 2005, I was surprised by the suggestion to send so many emails. This has now been replaced with sending SendOut Cards.
3. While I was so "stoked" by Chapter 8, "Becoming Even More Magnetc: Internet Savvy," it was interesting to note that the guidance in this book, on page 132, about "Google Local" is out of date. And, by the time I read this chapter, I thought, "Wow! Could Oechsli possibly offer more gems in the pages left?" The answer is, a resounding, "Absolutely!"

Very disapointed with this 2011 issue. Very few updates compared with previous issues.
F.e. Azamara cruises (now Azamara Club cruises) had a lot of improvements since 2008 and still have a very low quote for such a luxury product (in fact informations on this cruise line are far from accurate and still purely based on the (Ex Renaissance) ships.
Also, another example: Celebrity Constellation had a complete renovation but nothing mentioned in this issue
When changes are made by cruise lines in April they should appear in the 2011 edition

The White Book: The Beatles, the Bands, the Biz: An Insider's Look at an Era Review

The White Book: The Beatles, the Bands, the Biz: An Insider's Look at an Era
Average Reviews:

"When I picked up "The White Book," I honestly had no idea what to expect. What a pleasant surprise! I had never heard of Ken Mansfield before, and I consider myself a fairly knowledgeable Beatles fan. Mansfield, who was the former U.S. Manager of Apple Records, opts to take the high road in this engaging, funny and touching memoir that lifts up the Beatles rather than tears them down like so many other books. The Idaho-native made his way through the music business ranks in the 1960s and 1970s and knows how to tell a story, often sprinkling his prose with self-effacing humor and Lennon-esqe wit. Mansfield offers insightful and anecdotal information on the Fab Four, the Beach Boys, Waylon Jennings, David Cassidy and Dolly Parton. Not only does Mansfield give readers untold stories and beautiful pictures of the lads from Liverpool but us an insiders peep into the insane world of the recording industry. Required reading for Beatles fans and those looking to earn a living in the music business."

Through exclusive photos and personal stories, former US manager of Apple Records and Grammy Award winning producer Ken Mansfield offers a compelling memoir that delves into his life in the 1960s and '70s and his unique partnership with the Beatles and other musicians who orbited their world. As observer, friend, and colleague, Mansfield sat in their recording sessions, partied in their swimming pools, took their irate calls, and publicized their successes. Entertaining, historically accurate, and illuminating a side of the Fab Four known only to a few like Mansfield, The White Book shines fresh light on the true characters behind the cultural phenomena that revolutionized a generation. As the former Head of Apple Records International, Jack Oliver, has said of Ken, "He is one of the few insiders left that bore witness to the highs and lows of those insane days when we ruled the world."

"Ken has a unique gift. He can take you in the room and have you sit with the folk he knows and make you one of the gang, part of the plan. and considering these folk include the Beatles, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, the Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, David Cassidy and a whole host more that is some doing. I really enjoyed sitting in on his world and I respect the affection he has for our game, and what he brought to it, will get you."

ANDREW LOOG OLDHAMRolling Stones Manager and Producer

"Ken Mansfield brings us a new and closely personal perspective not only on the Beatles, but on a whole cast of musical characters from Brian Wilson to Don Ho. An observant and perceptive man in the centre of the storm; a contradictory man, both ambitious and spiritual, but at the heart of the record industry during its most exciting years and enjoying every minute of it. I lived through those years with Ken and we became friends. It is a pleasure to experience so much of it all again through the accuracy of his story telling and the clarity of his memory."

PETER ASHERPeter and Gordon/A&R Chief Apple Records/Producer-Manager (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King et al)

"Journalism is normally a very inexact science. Many of the countless books about the Beatles have been written by researchers-not by people who were actually there. Everyone has experienced reading a book or article where one's own inside knowledge about a particular person or event shows up inaccuracies on the part of the writer that totally distort the truth. This book is an exception-I know because I was there for some of it myself. Ken Mansfield and I unknowingly shared the experience of the famous Apple rooftop session where I was nervously adjusting mikes and cables for the sound recording of that unforgettable day. Ken was not only working for the Beatles through their heyday, he was also their trusted friend. There is no one better equipped to tell the Beatles' story-truthfully-and more importantly-factually, from the inside."

ALAN PARSONSEngineer to the Beatles/Pink Floyd, Multi Platinum Producer, Alan Parsons Project

"Unlike many people claiming a Beatles connection, Ken Mansfield doesn't have an agenda or try to elevate his role or importance. Ken comes across as a man who knows how lucky he was to be where he was and enjoys sharing his stories with us. Ken was there and that is why The White Bookis informative, fresh and entertaining without being ego-driven."

Frommer's Hong Kong (Frommer's Complete Guides) Review

Frommer's Hong Kong (Frommer's Complete Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If there is a hell for travel writers, I hope Beth Reiber will burn in it. The useful information in this book could be condensed into a postage stamp size guide: One good Dim Sum Restaurant, one good Macanese Restaurant and one walk in The Western District. I recently traveled with this book to Hong Kong. I had a Hong Kong resident as a companion and still got lost using this book. Ms. Reiber recommends a walking tour of Kowloon, but does not bother to place the last four destinations on the included map. Nor does she say that you will encounter two rivers of humanity flowing in both directions that will turn a fifteen minute walk into a half hour hike. It is easier for salmon to swim upstream to spawn than it is to find the Bird Market in Kowloon. She also recommends a Kowloon park that is not even on the visitor map! (Just hop on the bus, she says. It stops across from the park. Hah!) We took the bus to Stanley after seeing Victoria Peak. The bus ride is interesting but time consuming. First time travelers on a three day holiday will never be able to complete her suggested three day tour. Taxis speed things up at night, but get snarled in traffic during the day. I was there six days and saw most of the things on her list, including a side trip to Macao, but only by the grace of God did my Hong Kong friend and I find the ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral, so inadequate were the included maps. As for the unnecessary words: Anyone can walk into a four star hotel and find a great restaurant. If you follow Ms. Reiber's restaurant suggestions you'll be eating either Very Expensive or Expensive (her categories) most of the time. If you like to shop, which I do not, I'm sure you'll find Ms. Reiber's book helpful; she drags you through every major complex of shops on her walking tours. Rick Steves she ain't. So if you are planning a trip to Hong Kong you can buy this book, but get some good maps as a supplement and draw out your routes in advance. A few things Ms. Reiber doesn't mention: The locals seem to think that tea is a disinfectant for chop sticks and soup spoons. Bring a pack of Kleenex with you to a neighborhood restaurant, because napkins are not provided. And forget about breathing clean air while you are in Hong Kong. However, the city is full of delights and I intend to return, now that I know my way around.

From the Book: Street Food in Hong Kong Street-side food vendors are seemingly everywhere on both Hong Kong island and on the Kowloon side. Noodle dishes, curry fish balls, stinky tofu, and a variety of dim sum are just a few of the things you can taste. The stalls with tables and chairs are usually those that serve noodles; others are more take-out in nature.Where to Eat: Try the stalls around the various night markets, including Temple Street in Yau Ma Tei and Ladies' Market in Mong Kok on Tung Choi Street. In Tsim Sha Tsui, Hau Fook Street has several food stands. Mei Lun Street in Central and the laneways of Causeway Bay and Wan Chai are also crowded with food stalls. How Much: 20 Hong Kong dollars (about $2.60) for a bowl of noodles with vegetables and 10 Hong Kong dollars for a serving of four shumai ($1.30) dumplings.

Washington, D.C. (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE) Review

Washington, D.C. (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE)
Average Reviews:

We try to visit DC every couple of years, and next time we were thinking of paying for one of those guided city tours. We don't need the sites pointed out to us, but those tour guides always seem to have good information and anecdotes about the sites that you don't hear anywhere else. I thought that maybe we could save a couple hundred dollars if we could find a book that has that type of information. I bought the Unofficial Guide to Washington, D.C., and I also checked out the Frommer's Guide. They were very informative, but they didn't get me excited about any of the sites. They were pretty much just reference books (with very limited photos). However, when I opened up the Eyewitness Travel book, I was blown away. The color photos and color floor plans/cutaways of the buildings are outstanding. It really got me interested in places that I wouldn't have thought twice about if I had read just a text description.
The book also tells about the history of certain places and tells you what to do and where to go on three guided walks. It is a gourgeous and entertaining book that doubles as a tour guide (only cheaper). To keep up with the other guides, it also includes hotel and restaurant information.
I am not sure what the previous reviewer is talking about. I find it funny how some people politicize everything that they see, hear or read. I am into history, not politics, so this book was exactly what I was looking for.

Mr. Weinberger's book should be a "must read" for anyone contemplating a career in the entertainment industry. As head of development for a major feature film production company, and having worked with some of the people detailed in this book, I can honestly say that WANNABE is painfully accurate. From the copy room, to the board-room, Hollywood is filled with people acting richer, more powerful, and bigger than they really are. It's a fun, informative read.

We visited South Africa for 20 days in July 2000, driving from Cape Town to Kruger. Before we left we sat down at a large book store and reviewed all their South African travel books. This one looked the best and proved to be very useful, particularly for accomodations. Some of the prices had changed but the standards and services were exactly as described. This is a great book for travellers who are above the backpacker/budget level but not up to "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

A History of Roman Art, Enhanced Edition Review

A History of Roman Art, Enhanced Edition

I use this book as the primary text in my class on Roman Art and Archaeology. While it has largely an Art Historical bent, it is still the best, most comprehensive book that is currently available (I switch from Strong's Roman Art that pre-dates this text by a few decades).
The illustrations and images are beautiful, it has snippets of history and text to provide good context, and is organized in a nice, chronological fashion. I would highly recommend it to educators and beginner students who are studying Classical Art History.

A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, ENHANCED EDITION is a lavishly-illustrated survey of the art of Rome and the Roman Empire from the time of Romulus to the death of Constantine, presented in its historical, political, and social context. This ENHANCED EDITION has added coverage on Etruscan art in the beginning of the text. All aspects of Roman art and architecture are treated, including private art and domestic architecture, the art of the Eastern and Western provinces, the art of freedmen, and the so-called minor arts, including cameos, silverware, and coins. The book is divided into four parts-Monarchy and Republic, Early Empire, High Empire, and Late Empire-and traces the development of Roman art from its beginnings in the 8th century BCE to the mid fourth century CE, with special chapters devoted to Pompeii and Herculaneum, Ostia, funerary and provincial art and architecture, and the earliest Christian art.The original edition of this text was warmly received in the market based on a high level of scholarship, comprehensive contents, and superb visuals.
