Erie Canal (Great Destinations)
I bought this book because I wanted to plan some summertime trips near my home in upstate New York, and I needed to know details about lodgings, parks, and places to eat. Little did I know that I'd get an education, too: Who knew that Chittenango, NY, was the home of L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? Or that Waterford, NY, situated at the meeting of the Erie and Champlain canals, is the oldest incorporated village in the United States? And the author is quirky and fun. She obviously enjoyed the research. Wait `til you read the restaurant writeups. I'm dying to taste the scrumptious pies she describes from Grandma's Country Restaurant in Albany! I've come across a reference to the Rolling Stones (in a travel book on NY's canals?) and was tickled to find, in the Appendix, all the words for "Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal." I feel like I'll have a knowledgeable, fun friend with me when I take my trips!
