Popular Woodworking Practical Shop Math Review

Popular Woodworking Practical Shop Math
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is one of those rare ones where the title literally says it all: It's a practical shop math guide; however, it's also a little more than that.
The book starts with a review of basic math, focusing on operations involving fractions, followed by a review of basic geometry. The material about converting decimals to standard fractions is particularly good. The author does a very good job of offering a comprehensive review without being condescending or insulting. There are lots of examples and even exercises designed to allow you to test your understanding.
The heart of the book is the section called "Using Math in the Workshop." This focuses on those things that should be simple, but which can drive you nuts, such as enlarging grid patterns, determining miter angles for polygons, dividing angles and arcs, calculating board feet, and so on.
There's a sort of bonus feature I liked a lot, a very clear explanation of how to convert a picture into a dimensional drawing. This allows you to do something that seems impossible: You can make an actual plan out of a picture in a catalog or magazine. (It's not really easy to do so, but at least it's possible.)
The book is very high quality and easy to use. The paper is thick and glossy, so it should be durable in the shop. It's spiral-bound, so the pages lay flat.
After having it for just a few days, I can see that this book will become one of my most useful woodworking tools. I'm VERY happy I bought it, and I recommend it most highly.

The Classical Hollywood Cinema: Film Style & Mode of Production to 1960 Review

The Classical Hollywood Cinema: Film Style and Mode of Production to 1960
Average Reviews:

I love old movies. They have some kind of magic that sadly I can't find in movies today. What this book does is to study the classical years- The classical narrative and how the system, style and people made together these classical movies. The starting point of this book is that almost all of the movies from 1917 to 1960 have the same elements, the same style- the style that today we all referring to when we think of hollywood- the way the story goes, the technical making (filming, editing) that tries to stay unseen and more. The authors choose 100 films from these years, almost all of them are not famous ones or films that made special impact, but films that were made out of the system. Out of these films they show the reader how the hollywood style make us blind to the technical elements and to the similarity of them- because although the norms changed all the time by films that broke the old norms- they all have similar basis. This book is very interesting and I recommend it to everyone who wants to learn more about classical hollywood from the films themselves. The only complaint I have (and it's refering to the edition I read, which is from 1985)) is that the pages are divided to columns and it makes the reading a little uneasy, but still worth the reading.

Tyler Cowen has done an outstanding job of making the case for free competition in cultural pursuits. Culture and commerce are revealed not as antagonists, but as complementary. The tension between them enriches both. Stands the Marxist cultural critique on its head. Must reading for anyone seriously interested in what has come to be called the "culture war."

Roadside Baseball: The Locations of America's Baseball Landmarks Review

Roadside Baseball: The Locations of America's Baseball Landmarks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I cannot remember enjoying a baseball book this much. It focuses on hundreds of historic baseball landmarks, and the breadth of places is fascinating. There are all of the classic former ballpark sites like the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field, complete with a description and photos of what is there now. Dozens of baseball museums I never knew existed, historically placed markers identifying famous homeruns by Babe Ruth, the home of Connie Mack, sacred baseball burial grounds and much more. I cannot believe how much I learned from this book (and I have studied the game for a long time). Some fine detective work here--like where Lou Gehrig really played his last game, the birthsite of Jackie Robinson, and where Babe Ruth pitched a notable yet obscure game against Walter Johnson in California. Lots of historic Negro League sites, too--for we baseball fans who love the road and who love history, this is our ultimate guide and I've never seen anything like it.

Cultural Tourism: The Partnership Between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management Review

Cultural Tourism: The Partnership Between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Cultural Tourism - The Partnership Between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management" presents a strong and well argued case for building a vital and productive partnership between two potentially competing interest groups.
The book is an excellent and thorough disertation and expansion on the principles and guidelines contained in the "ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Charter". ICOMOS is the international organisation that brings together all those who work in the field of historic building and site conservation. The protection and conservation of their historic buildings, sites and places is an important part of the cultural identity of every community. Presentation of the significant characteristics of these places to the public is essential if there is to be widespread support for their protection and conservation. The tourism industry plays an important part in this presentation process.
Hilary and Bob have explored many of the ideas contained in the Charter, provided case studies and taken the work into new areas. As a result, I have no doubt that it will become one of the seminal texts related to the work of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee, as it encourages productive linkages between toruism and cultural heritage management internationally.

Hisashi Sugaya, former Chairman of the Committee notes that "the book identifies those factors that must be considered when evaluating the tourism potential of cultural or heritage assets, and presents a model for evaluating how to integrate tourism with cultural heritage management". Dr Walter Jamieson, a heritage tourism consultant working in South East Asia, notes that "the book is a very useful contribution to our understanding of maintaining our heritage within the context of tourism development".

Graham Brooks

Examine cultural tourism issues from both sides of the industry!Unique in concept and content, Cultural Tourism: The Partnership Between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management examines the relationship between the sectors that represent opposite sides of the cultural tourism coin. While tourism professionals assess cultural assets for their profit potential, cultural heritage professionals judge the same assets for their intrinsic value. Sustainable cultural tourism can only occur when the two sides form a true partnership based on understanding and appreciation of each other's merits. The authors--one, a tourism specialist, the other, a cultural heritage management expert--present a model for a working partnership with mutual benefits, integrating management theory and practice from both disciplines.Cultural Tourism is the first book to combine the different perspectives of tourism management and cultural heritage management. It examines the role of tangible (physical evidence of culture) and intangible (continuing cultural practices, knowledge, and living experiences) heritage, describes the differences between cultural tourism products and cultural heritage assets, and develops a number of conceptual models, including a classification system for cultural tourists, indicators of tourism potential at cultural and heritage assets, and assessment criteria for cultural and heritage assets with tourism potential. Cultural Tourism examines the five main constituent elements involved in cultural tourism:
cultural and heritage assets in tourism sites such as the Royal Palace in Bangkok, the Cook Islands, and Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco.
tourism--what it is, how it works, and what makes it a success
five different types of cultural tourists
consumption of products, value adding, and commodification
integrating the first four elements to satisfy the tourist, meet the needs of the tourism industry, and conserve the intrinsic value of the asset
Though tourism and cultural heritage management professionals have mutual interests in the management, conservation, and presentation of cultural and heritage assets, the two sectors operate on parallel planes, maintaining an uneasy partnership with surprisingly little dialogue. Cultural Tourism provides professionals and students in each field with a better understanding of their own roles in the partnership, bridging the gap via sound planning, management, and marketing to produce top-quality, long-lasting cultural tourism products. Now translated into simplified Chinese.

Urban Ministry: The Kingdom, the City & the People of God Review

Urban Ministry: The Kingdom, the City and the People of God
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is THE text book that everyone involved in urban ministry needs to read. Conn & Ortiz have worked together to create a book that covers almost every aspect of urban ministry, not only informing the reader of the challenges of urban ministry, but equipping the reader to face those challenges.
The book begins by placing the urban environment within the context of world history. The city was originally a place of worship, then it became a political center, a cultural center and a commercial center. The authors then focus on the global urban population explosion. These cities are growing for three reasons. These are first of all due to better medical care there is a stable birth rate and a declining death rate. Secondly, there is the push from the rural areas moving toward the cities for a better life. Finally there is the pull of the cities with the dream of having a better job and a better standard of living.
The authors wait until chapter thirteen to define the city as: "a relatively large, dense and socially heterogeneous center of integrative social power, capable of preserving, changing and interpreting human culture both for and against God's divine purpose." The reader is challenged to rethink a rural centric Christian ideal which has retreated from the cities for many years turning the cities into a large and growing mission field.
The authors explore the role of the city as a center of culture, power and commerce. The city has always been a place of stability. In ancient times the city had walls for protection and today cities have large buildings that give an element of stability, yet the city is also a place of constant change. In this tension the urban minister is urged to be knowledgeable and prepared for ministry. The authors call the reader to make use of the social sciences, anthropology and demographics in their urban ministry. The final chapters are incredibly practical, teaching the reader about selecting and training urban leaders and mobilizing the laity.
The message of the book is not to just evangelism in the city, but mobilizing leaders and the church as a whole to bring about social transformation in the global urban centers.

No. 3 in the 2002 Academy of Parish Clergy Top Ten Books of the Year! The city presents serious challenges that cry out for answers: poverty, racism, human exploitation and government corruption. How can the church move ahead in the midst of these demands with the gospel of hope? Here, in one comprehensive volume, Harvie Conn and Manuel Ortiz, two noted scholars and proven practitioners of urban ministry, address the vital work of the church in the city. Their dual goal: to understand the city and God's work in it.Through four great waves of development, Conn and Ortiz trace the history of the city around the world. Then they tackle the critical issue of a biblical basis for urban mission. How does the Bible view the city? Are we closer to God in the country than the city? Does the Bible have an anti-urban bias? These questions are given a thorough analysis that unveils God's urban mandate as reflected in both Old and New Testaments. From this foundation the authors unpack the multifaceted nature of the city as place, as process, as center, as power, and as a place of change and stability. They move us beyond fragmented stereotypes to a new way of seeing that is holistic enough for a fully biblical ministry to develop. In addition, Conn and Ortiz lay out what the social sciences have to offer urban mission, including ethnographic and demographic studies and they focus on the particular issues and needs of urban leadership, including a plan for developing and mentoring leaders while equipping the laity for ministry in the city. This is the essential text for bringing God's kingdom to the city through the people of God. Mr. Lewin's guide was the most complete source I could find covering everything from different types of raw materials used in making furniture to how to buy from retailers. He has amassed a wealth of knowledge in his 36 years in the business and shares the information in an enjoyable manner. He covers topics such as veneering and leather quality with such finesse that the average person comes away feeling like an expert. The book was indispensable in helping me deal with retailers by giving me the confidence and power to sift through superfluous information and get to the essential facts. Mr. Lewin was even so kind as to return my phone call to answer a question I had about a certain manufacturer.
I believe this book would be of great value to anyone interested in the construction and purchase of fine quality furniture.

Inside El Barrio: A Bottom-Up View of Neighborhood Life in Castro's Cuba
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Henry Louis Taylor has produced an accessible and important work with Inside El Barrio. His review of the pre-revolutionary period gives us an excellent grasp of the ways in which the U.S. military occupation set the stage for continued exploitation and suppression of the Cuban people through the first half of the 20th century. We see the enormous obstacles the Revolutionaries had to overcome post-1959 and the practical decisions taken toward those goals. The 'boogeyman" of Cuba is peeled away to reveal that the development of this unique nation has been undertaken methodically and with one common goal: a better society, with justice and equality. Taylor does not turn a blind eye to the problems faced by Cuba, rather, he places the struggle in a context to which we can relate: neighbourhoods, communities, relationships, families. Highly recommended.

* Revealing portrait of daily life in Cuba that explores how the socialist system has operated on the ground over the last two decades* Shows how social networks and neighborhoods were critical in sustaining Fidel's regime while other socialist countries were collapsing in the late 80sThe abrupt collapse of the Soviet Union and the East European Communist Bloc in 1989 plunged Cuba into a catastrophic economic crisis that spawned unprecedented hardship, magnified social tensions, and emigration in the thousands. In July 1990, a somber Fidel Castro called upon the masses to prepare for a sustained period of hard times.Inside El Barrio charts the legacy of Fidel Castro through the unique lens of Cuban household life duringEl Período Especial (the Special Period).Taylor traverses the neighborhoods and residential developments of Havana between 1989 and 2006, the final and most complex period in the "Age of Castro's Cuba" to uncover the hidden vibrancy of Cuba's streets and citizens. In doing so, he acquires a deeper understanding of Cuban society by exploring what it means to live in a people-centered nation and the importance of neighborhoods in shaping everyday life and culture.

This recently published guide covers the key topics a Singapore expat needs to know. I was pleasantly surprised to find how much was covered - not just the essentials I'd learned on my own over the last few years living in Singapore, but also new things I never knew before but wanted to know. Like what to do if construction noise is a serious disruption, or what career resources are available in the city. The section on children and schooling is particularly comprehensive.
The section on shopping is very useful for the expat rather than the tourist. However, the food section is the opposite - it reads like a tourist guide and doesn't give long-term residents the flavor of the neighborhoods.
I find myself reaching for the guide to learn more about business and legal matters, an excellent chapter. I also enjoy the travel section which is both practical and very good fun!
This is a worthwhile purchase for expats in Singapore, and not just the new ones.

I have been a professional college counselor for more than 10 years, and I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's an upstart title in the college guidebook industry - this is the first edition - but it has such a novel take on the process, and offers such innovative features, that I'll be very surprised if it isn't here to stay.
A colleague of mine recently said this book is the next best thing to spending a week on each college's campus. I usually shy away from cliches like that - but, in this case, it's very close to the truth. If you're looking at any of America's top 100 colleges and universities, I highly recommend it.

No Worries Hawaii: A Vacation Planning Guide for Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island
Average Reviews:

In my work at Guide to Travel Guides, we concentrate on finding excellent travel books from smaller publishers, books that travelers may not yet be familiar with. No Worries Hawaii, newly published in late 2007, is just such a book. Really a travel planning guide without peer. Its 160 pages are fabulous stuff, chocked full of helpful information and some of the loveliest color photos around. If you play ball with the Sprouts, they'll help you zero in on the greatest island vacation you've ever had. The Sprouts are veterans of the Hawaii guidebook scene. Their deservedly much-praised Trailblazer series includes four titles on the islands of Hawaii: Kauai Trailblazer, Maui Trailblazer, Oahu Trailblazer, and Hawaii the Big Island Trailblazer, all of which focus on outdoor activities of every kind: walks, hikes, bicycle rides, snorkeling, driving tours and on and on. In No Worries Hawaii they use their expertise to help you decide the type of vacation you want, the setting you want, the activities you value most, and where best to find them. Moving from an armchair voyage in which you envision and clarify your wants and needs to a clever, simple self-test to help you prioritize your wish list, No Worries Hawaii then relates all this homework you've done to a highly detailed, 36-category Best of Hawaii section. If you spend the time, the system really works. If you are too lazy, just focusing on the Best of Hawaii section, plus a good look at the Best of Hawaii scoreboard to see which island ranks highest for your needs will take you a long way toward paradise. Practical information abounds, with lots of money saving advice and a wonderfully detailed "Wiki Wiki Phonebook" for all the contact information you'll ever need. This is one great travel planning guide--if only other travel destinations had something this good.

Get To The Heart of Your DestinationHalf of Hawaii's 8 million yearly tourists are first-timers, often unsure of which island to visit, where to stay, and what to choose to do. NO WORRIES HAWAII, a companion book to the Sprout's adventure guides for each of the islands, comes to the rescue. The book is also useful for repeat visitors or locals looking for new adventures. Readers first take an armchair voyage, in which they nail down their vacation style (a scouting expedition, a romantic getaway, a solo or group adventure, invigorating, relaxing, healing). These likings are matched with what Hawaii has to offer. A clever but simple self-test allows readers to sort through Hawaii's assets: beaches, nightlife, trails, gardens, attractions, cultural sites, surfing, snorkeling, 36 categories in all, to determine which are important and which island is best. In the second part of NO WORRIES HAWAII, readers take their decisions from part one and receive all the practical and money-saving advice needed to book a vacation that makes the armchair voyage become a real one. Included also is a complete list of what to pack. The third part of the book is full of tips on what to do and what not to do after arriving in the islands. Readers will deplane as kama'aina (locals), having the benefit of the Sprout's 20 years of exploration. Sections include how to plan days to maximize fun and avoid hassle, finding free entertainment, car rental and accommodation money-savers. Readers are advised on how to, and whether to, book tours (snorkeling, sailing, helicopter, horseback, etc.). The book's safety tips are a literal lifesaver, and the everyday advice on driving, hiking, and beach-going are essential forgetting the most fun out of every day.The meat of NO WORRIES HAWAII is its Best Of section, a listing of Hawaii's top attractions: museums, rainforest dayhikes, snorkeling coves, walk-around beach towns, surfing spots, places to watch surfers, mountain bike trails, people-watching beaches, botanical gardens, short strolls to views, cultural sites, luxury resorts, volcano hikes, bird-watching forests, waterfalls, churches, remote beaches, family beach parks, golf courses, and more. Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide Featuring Downtown, the Beaches, and Coconut Grove Review

Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide Featuring Downtown, the Beaches, and Coconut Grove
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nestled on Biscayne Bay, Miami is barely one hundred years old. Yet its natural assets, primarily weather and water, have inspired successive generations of architects to create an urban and suburban lifestyle unlike that of any major city in the world.
Published in time for the first convention of the American Institute of Architects in Miami since the 60s, Miami Architecture is chock full of examples of the very best Miami architecture. Much of what is included is well-known but there are an assortment of gems that even native Miamians like myself pass by and take for granted. Its focus on three areas, downtown, the Grove and Miami Beach seems somewhat arbitrary and self-limiting but within that twenty or so square miles exists some of the finest and most daring architecture of the last one hundred years.
Address and pictures make this guidebook a handy reference not only for visiting architects but also for tourists, newcomers, and natives alike. Whether you love MiMo or SoBe style, this is the perfect guide.
