I have to agree with Shannon. I don't know how, with such an interesting idea, this book could be so boring. I had very high hopes because I remember a similar Then and Now book that came out back in the 80s (maybe for the sesqicentennial) that was so well done and covered many areas besides downtown. In this book, the "Then" photos are okay and cover only a short time in Dallas' history (its early years), and the "Now" photos are pretty terrible. This lackluster book contains none of the heart or spirit of Dallas, unfortunately. If you want to see more of what Dallas used to look like, go to the downtown library and check out their photo catalog. You'll get a much better feel for what Dallas used to be like ... and you won't have to spend any money, either.

"Big D" is known the world over as a dynamic center of business and culture. Dallas Then and Now captures in photographs the amazing changes the city has seen over the last century. It includes "Old Red", the original county courthouse, Dealey Plaza and the Kennedy Memorial, Dallas City Hall designed by I. M. Pei, the original Neiman-Marcus, and the original Six Flags amusement park. Other important buildings, sites, and neighborhoods are documented in archival and modern photographs shown side-by-side to illustrate the city's dramatic history.

The Xbox 360 Uncloaked:: The Real Story Behind Microsoft's Next-Generation Video Game Console

Dean Takahashi is a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News. While I applaud his efforts to do the research and leg work to uncover the history, back story and technical details of the Xbox 360, this book just simply is not well written. Dean does a nice job in news reporting related to the tech industry and gaming in general but he is no novelist. This book is obviously not a novel either but you might expect it to be at least a story...In my opinion, it is not- it is a collection of observations loosely tied together, and even then, it is flawed.
As other reviewers have noted, you will find yourself reading the same information, names, and sometimes even quotes in multiple places throughout the book, making it harder to follow his line of thinking clearly. Oftentimes, there is also a bit much of the delineation of who worked for who and who quit the Xbox team when, etc. that does not really lead the reader anywhere or add much to the story. To me, this book feels similar to the previous Xbox book written by Dean in that way- some great tidbits but overall, barely worth reading because of how painful it is to get through it. I've never had this situation happen to me before where I seriously wanted to learn the history and background of building this console, the process that was followed, etc. but was simply not motivated to continue reading the book because of its flaws.
If you are used to reading more professional novels or magazine writing by mainstream writers, you may be frustrated by the common grammatical errors, editorial errors, proofreading mistakes, etc. that pop up in every chapter. They aren't a big deal and you know what he is trying to say but when you pay for a book (that isn't all that cheap, by the way) you expect more. At least I do.
In summary, since I am an IT professional and an avid Xbox and Xbox 360 gamer, I kind of forced my way through the book to learn. You have to take a different approach to reading it, kind of ignoring errors, focusing on the highlights and not trying to tie everything together seamlessly, very differently than you would likely read any other book. If you feel this story is worthwhile enough to put up with these flaws, go for it. Otherwise, you may be disappointed.

Appetite for Life Review

Appetite for Life

Julia Child as a personality has long been melded with Julia Child, the cook. I watched her shows in the sixties as a child having little interest in the kitchen, but simply finding her fascinating to watch! 'The French Chef', unlike the Galloping Gourmet and others, has aged well and can still be watched with enjoyment. Why? Because Julia Child was always herself on TV, never pandering to the transient and fickle tastes of the times.
Watching Julia's various series, I learned some about her life, but eagerly purchased this book when it first appeared. Unlike some other reviewers, I delighted in this auther's literary painting of the times in which Julia has lived. To me, nothing is more disappointing in a biography than the feeling that something has been left out!
This book demonstrates that though her name to the public has been made by her cooking career, Julia Child is much, much more. For those who enjoy reading biographies, this will provide enjoyment regardless of whether they like cooking or not!

Trojan Horse: Death of a Dark Nation, is one of the best books I have read in recent years. It is well written, thought provoking and full of examples of how white supremacy affects African Americans in all aspects of their daily lives. This book demystifies the institution of racism, which empowers the reader with knowledge about this enigmatic institution. This is an eye opener and a must read. Anon, great work!

The Playboy Guide to Bachelor Parties: Everything You Need to Know About Planning the Groom's Rite of Passage-From Simple to Sinful
Average Reviews:

I am a skeptic when it comes to the usefulness of guide books, but this one is worth the investment. The book definitely saved me time and money, and it taught me how to throw a better party. Here are the 3 main reasons why I give it 5 big stars:
1. Well researched and organized. The author packs the book with information, facts and ideas that are valuable and practical. The book explains your options, from basic planning to often overlooked details -- check lists, budget guidelines, common scams, and even a brothel glossary -- it's all included. All important party questions -- why, how, who, what, when and how much -- are answered in precise terms.
2. Very well-rounded content. The Playboy title might lead you to think this book is all about strippers, but it actually gives ideas for tame as well as wild parties. It even explains how to balance out a variety of activities, to keep everyone happy and sustain the desired party vibe.
3. Funny and reads well. The author has a concise and humorous style. I think it works best as a reference, letting you find out what you need to know fast. But you could also read it straight through. Classic Playboy cartoons are mixed in with the text, making it entertaining to browse.

Most bachelor parties are flawed in some way -- boring, predictable, uncomfortable, expensive, unstructured. The culprit: bad planning. The Playboy Guide to Bachelor Parties makes a great gift for any man, whether he's planning a traditional raunchy boozefest or a more civilized affair of steaks and scotch. Learn what usually goes wrong and why; the who, when, and where of invitations; how much the night will cost; the ins and outs of cigars, booze, and limousines; and last-minute bachelor party ideas. There are more options than you think! Activities range from the PG-rated fishing, golfing, skydiving, and whitewater rafting to the R-rated strippers and shot glasses. Do you know how to toast the groom? How to call for a stripper -- and not get scammed? And what to tell your girlfriend the next day? Playboy, in its 50th year of celebrating bachelorhood, knows best. • Contains complete listings of possible party activities and prices • Includes complete city guides for hotspots like Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Tijuana • Explains brothel terms and stripper scams • Saves party planners money and hassles • Offers a mix-and-match activity chart and to-do checklist • Loaded with entertaining trivia, quotes, toasts, and classic Playboy cartoons

Maryland: A New Guide to the Old Line State Review

Maryland: A New Guide to the Old Line State
Average Reviews:

Maryland is not a state many people think of when they consider a travel destination. That, of course, doesn't mean that Maryland isn't dense with cultural, historical, and natural treasures. This book covers all of them in fine detail, with an emphasis on the cultural and historical. It's not a travel guide per se, but more of an historical and cultural survey of the state's towns and institutions. That said, it covers them exhaustively. Think the Eastern Shore, Delmarva, and the far west frequently get the short end of the stick in Maryland guides and histories? Not in this case. I lived in Maryland for almost 20 years, in Frederick County, and I've not found a better portrait of that beautiful part of the United States anywhere. This book has been in print for over two decades, and it's still a best seller. I like it so much, I bought it three times.
Maryland has the nickname "Little America" for a reason. Its geography and history are enormously diverse - somewhat appropriate for a border state that has served as a national crossroads for centuries. There are parts of Maryland that look and feel like Virginia. There are parts that look and feel like West Virginia, and there are parts that look and feel like New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. This book will really give you a precise flavor of Maryland's lovely diversity. Want to know this little, modest border state? Read this book.

The author, a professor and coordinator of the Gaming Studies Research Center at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, really hits the jackpot with this, his first publication. Although I am a financial analyst, specializing in the gaming industry, I was intrigued by Dr. Schwartz's historical analysis of the development of legalized gaming in Las Vegas and throughout the United States. The book is extremely well-researched and, while clearly written by a scholar, it has a friendly, accessible style. Suburban Xanadu has something for those interested in business, American history, popular culture, gaming, "the Rat Pack," sociology, etc. I have recommended this book to my colleagues and I look forward to reading future works from this unique young author.

Urban gambling, linked to poverty, crime and corruption, was once considered a blight on US cities. Gambling then followed the exodus of Americans into the suburbs after World War II and now, at the beginning of the 21st century, most Americans live within a four-hour drive of a casino. What explains the success of places like Las Vegas? The self-contained casino resort removes gambling and its social problems from cities and provides Americans with the comfort of gambling in a setting matched to their suburban lifestyle. In a detailed look at the growth of the earliest casino resorts to the "pleasure palaces" and riverboat casinos of today, "Suburban Xanadu" locates the rise of the casino resort in suburbanization and the significance of this development for today.

Traveler's Guide to the Civil Rights Movement Review

Traveler's Guide to the Civil Rights Movement
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is fascinating even if you never leave home. It's both a travel guide and a reference for anyone wanting to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement. But it's not limited to modern times; like many historians, the author takes the view that the struggle for civil rights began the moment the first enslaved African set foot on these shores and tried to break free. And it continued anywhere that people fought for dignity and equality.
Consequently, the sites described here include sites of slave rebellions, legal battles, Underground Railroad safe houses, historically black colleges, churches, museums...even the minor league stadium in Florida where Jackie Robinson broke through the color line.
I particularly enjoyed the author's honest and opinionated style. Black history has been overshadowed by white interpretation for a very long time, even in locations where the majority population was black. Visit a Southern plantation and you will learn about the lifestyle of the owners, but very little about the slaves who made that lifestyle possible. You may ogle the beautiful handcrafted furniture, yet never be told that a black artisan created it. He notes that much depends on which particular docent you end up with. Regarding Monticello, he says "...some guides more comfortable with the old Jefferson story of his inventions and quirks acknowledge the Hemings affair in clipped tones. Others discuss it volubly."
The National Park Service is among those working toward a more inclusive interpretation of their historic sites, and Carrier tells us when changes are planned. He provides web sites for further study. He also writes about planned memorials.
Women are equally represented here. For example, he notes that the Montgomery bus boycott was Jo Ann Robinson's brainchild and that a "reluctant" Martin Luther King Jr. was brought in to head the movement the day after the Women's Political Caucus had distributed leaflets to every business and church in town. He also notes that despite black women's long history of struggle for civil rights, the male leadership refused to allow any to speak at the 1963 March on Washington...in fact, Coretta King and other wives weren't wasn't even allowed to march with their husbands. "...after all their work and sacrifice, deliberate rebuff by male activists was unforgivable" he says.
A book that belongs in every high school library!

In 2004, the United States will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. As our country begins a national retrospective of the civil rights movement, here is the perfect book to help explore the long struggle toward racial equality. Part guidebook, part civil rights primer, A Traveler's Guide to the Civil Rights Movement memorializes the years 1954 to 1965 as well as the vast, underappreciated black history from which our modern civil rights movement began.More than five million people visit civil rights and black history landmarks each year, from the National Voting Rights Museum and the King Center to lesser-known spots such as slave auction sites and the locations of crucial marches and boycotts. This author has gone through great pains to make this book a very nice history of a park we all thought would make us forget Disneyland. Very, very well done and factual. Answers a lot of questions about how this great park came to be and what ultimately happened to end the park's short but memorable era. I read this in one sitting because I could not put it down.

Billed as BostonÂ's answer to Disneyland, Pleasure Island opened on June 22, 1959. William Hawkes, president of Childlife Magazine, and executives at Cabot, Cabot and Forbes collaborated with Marco Engineering of Los Angeles to build what was called the Â"Disneyland of the East.Â" Pleasure Island rose from the wetlands off of Route 128 into an 80-acre theme park. Through photographs, Pleasure Island recalls memories of boat rides to Pirate Cove, searching for the great white whale, driving a Jenney car, getting dizzy in the Slanty Shanty, and taking a ride on Old Smoky. At Pleasure Island, children and children at heart entered into a world that traditional amusement parks could not provide, where character actors continually put on a show and the entire park was the stage.

HTML 4 Bible (with CD-ROM)

This "Bible" eases new HTML-coders into the language very gently and contains a variety of info. It introduces a very specific way to learn HTML 4 in tandem with Cascading Style Sheets and eventually JavaScript, which is theoretically the best way to learn the language... however some of the positioning tricks the authors suggest are still not supported by all browsers, and alternatives are not always suggested. There are a few typos that will frustrate more than a few readers. After spending time actually coding pages, the reader will want to find a specific answer to a nitty-gritty question or problem, but will only find an ambiguous "gloss".The book is a good start for anyone who is anxious about jumping into HTML. For the serious web builder and experienced coders, it offers a different slant on HTML 4, and excellent descriptions of CSS, etc., but will eventually need to be supplemented with another reference. It's not quite a "Bible".

Architectural Guidebook to San Francisco and the Bay Area Review

Architectural Guidebook to San Francisco and the Bay Area
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a recent, substantial review of this guidebook by Steven Finacom in the Berkeley Daily Planet, Weekday Edition, Oct.30-Nov.1, 2007. Some excerpts are:
"A long-awaited, much-needed, and up-to-date guide to the great and representative buildings and architectural history of the Bay Area debuts this month."....
"This guide is organized geographically by county, with individual cities, districts, and structures provided. The writers went into the field with notebook and camera as well as consulting an array of historical documents, surveys, and local experts." ....
"Architecturally, the most prominent local communities such as San Francisco and Berkeley have been well covered by previous guides (including two written by Cerny) and published architectural histories. However, many smaller or less visible Bay Area towns, cities and neighborhoods have been overlooked.
"This book, with more than 500 pages of text and over 2,000 individual entries, rectifies the imbalance and provides a regional perspective, addressing not just the older city centers but the suburbs, and profiling their major edifices and representative structures from cattle ranching days to Gold Rush to dot-com boom." ....
"They [Cerny and her co-authors] brought a catholic sensibility to their writing and selection of projects, respectfully showing the whole panorama of Bay Area architectural history and urban development." ....
"If you're at all interested in the architecture and history of the Bay Area, this will be an indispensable reference to own. I may, in fact, get two copies; one for home, and one that stays in the car, so that on trips through the Bay Area, quick answers to "what building is that?" can finally be found."

Back in my Berklee days I attended a course with Peter entitled "Entrepreneurship" which opened my eyes to issues regarding both making music and doing business. It taught me that neither of these areas can exist without the other. I am still using the material and resources Peter handed out on this course and I am very excited that all this information and a lot more is now available in this excellent book.
A quick look through the pages gives you an impression of its well-organised structure and the incredible amount of resources that it contains. The book gives you an in-depth yet easily accessible look at the music industry, business planning, copyright, PR, demo production, gigs, media, radio stations, etc..... really, all you need!
As the Internet is about to change the entire music industry I am pleased that Peter devotes an entire section to this medium and how musicians use it for promotion. This is underlined by the most helpful list of books, magazines, associations and web sites I have come across.
