Hollywood Faith: Holiness, Prosperity, and Ambition in a Los Angeles Church Review

Hollywood Faith: Holiness, Prosperity, and Ambition in a Los Angeles Church

I may be wrong. I truly HOPE that I am wrong. But, I suspect that some readers will not appreciate this book. It is academic. It includes sociological terminology. The scope of the author's research is to profile only one Californian church. It is definitely not a "how to" book, nor is it a particularly easy read.
Yet -- this is an EXCELLENT book. Here is the key to unlocking this book's value: "Hollywood Faith is not a comprehensive social history of Oasis, and it is not a how-to manual for spiritual revitalization. This book is a sociological interpretation of a church I believe IS SIGNIFICANT FOR UNDERSTANDING VITAL RELIGIOUS TRENDS TODAY" (page 19, emphasis mine).
For example - here's a trend. Throughout 2009, we have been dealing with a global recession. The bubble has burst. A critical question to be answered by Christian leaders today is: "How should our ministry adapt to the needs of our people during an economic time such as this?" Now, read: "Hollywood Faith". Here is a church where economic hardship and broken dreams has been a part of their context for years. These Christians "challenge laborers to reconsider their self-identity and their self-worth" (186). This Church has become a model of building authentic community among those who had huge dreams, but now are coming to terms with life's realities.
Other vital religious trends? Seeking as Christians to make a positive difference in reference to secular morality (e.g. Hollywood), rather than running and hiding from it. Or, developing multi-ethnic ministry that is truly welcoming and fun! Or, relating to 20-30's unchurched singles so that they feel connected to a local family.
Sincerely, thank you Gerardo for using the gifts God has given you. I cannot wait to read your next book!

In Christianity, as with most religions, attaining holiness and a higher spirituality while simultaneously pursuing worldly ideals such as fame and fortune is nearly impossible. So how do people pursuing careers in Hollywood's entertainment industry maintain their religious devotion without sacrificing their career goals? For some, the answer lies just two miles south of the historic center of Hollywood, California, at the Oasis Christian Center. In Hollywood Faith, Gerardo Marti shows how a multiracial evangelical congregation of 2,000 people accommodates itself to the entertainment industry and draws in many striving to succeed in this harsh and irreverent business. Oasis strategically sanctifies ambition and negotiates social change by promoting a new religious identity as "champion of life"-an identity that provides people who face difficult career choices and failed opportunities a sense of empowerment and endurance. The first book to provide an in-depth look at religion among the "creative class," Hollywood Faith will fascinate those interested in the modern evangelical movement and anyone who wants to understand how religion adapts to social change.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

An Actor Prepares...To Live in New York City: How to Live Like a Star Before You Become One

What a gold mine! This book isn't just for actors--it is a meticulously-researched, up-to-date and readable guide to living well in Manhattan without watching money flow through your fingers--it covers everything from haircuts and clothes to great deals at the opera. I'm recommending it to all newcomers, regardless of profession. If I had to find one small flaw, it's that I'm not quite confident about his recommendations for women, as--and he freely admits this--they rely on the judgment of his female friends, and the reader can't gauge whether these women share the author's ability to find the best, the least expensive and the most hard-to-find secrets of New York. Regardless, a minor detail in a worthwhile book.

A guide for actors, and everyone else, to getting the best for less and surviving, thriving and living the good life in the Big Apple. Here is the ultimate guidebook for the hordes of aspiring young performers who arrive in the Big City determined to climb the ladder to stardom. But the purpose of Craig Wroe, an actor himself, is not to provide instruction on how to refine acting, singing or dancing talents or how to land a job in the chorus of The Producers. Plenty of other books do that. His aim is far broader - to help you survive in the crowded, frantic, expensive maelstrom that is New York. From finding a decent, reasonably inexpensive place to live to finding competent, reasonably inexpensive dental care, from getting computer training to organize your day-to-day existence to joining a gym to harden your body, from eating well to dressing better - all on a tight budget - there is virtually no aspect of life in New York that is not covered in this book. And it not only names names; it gives addresses and phone numbers as well. And keep in mind that newly-arrived lawyers, accountants, models, writers-you name them-need these things too.

If you travel with a list of local NPR stations so you can keep up with commercial free information and news, then this is the perfect traveling companion. The listings and descriptions of large and small museums, both specialized and general are delightfully informative. Ms Loebl has certainly done her homework. This is a must for family trips.

The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks Review

The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks

A wonderful "Haunted House" mystery from Josh Lanyon. It has all the best ingredients: a reputedly haunted old mansion turned into apartments and populated by as colorful an assortment of weird and suspicious characters as you could wish for (except for the two leads, of course: one is a cute artist, the other is a studly ex-Navy SEAL).
The opening is classic: the hero finds a dead body in his bathtub, runs to raise the alarm and when the cluless cops and everyone go to look, it's gone. No one believes him, naturally. There are creaking, dragging noises in the walls at night; a crazy old lady wandering through the house at all hours; a missing stash of stolen jewels; a climactic gun battle, you name it.
The book is also a M/M romance, for those who need to know, one way or the other. Ringing yet another change on the ancient erastes/eromenos theme (both parties are adults, btw), Mr. Lanyon generates as much, if not more, suspense here as he does with the murder mystery. There's also a relevant, cautionary plot element about the risks of pursuing that modern chimera, the internet `"relationship."
Written in Mr. Lanyon's usual master craftsman style, with razor sharp dialog and fun cultural references, the book is a delight to read - and you won't want to put it down until the last body has tumbled out of the closet.

His romantic weekend in ruins, shy twenty-something artist Perry Foster learns that things can always get worse when he returns home from San Francisco to find a dead body in his bathtub. A dead body in a very ugly sportscoat--and matching socks. The dead man is a stranger to Perry, but that's not much of a comfort; how did a strange dead man get in a locked flat at the isolated Alton Estate in the wilds of the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont? Perry turns to help from "tall, dark and hostile" former navy SEAL Nick Reno--but is Reno all that he seems?
