My wife and I went to St. Lucia in April. We had prepared for our trip by reading all this book had to say about the island, which was very helpful in planning day trips, money exchange, restaurants, etc. We took the book with us and it was extremely helpful with maps when we drove around the island, and the different side trips off the main road. I would highly recommend it to any who are planning a trip to that area!

One Hundred Semesters: My Adventures as Student, Professor, and University President, and What I Learned along the Way Review

One Hundred Semesters: My Adventures as Student, Professor, and University President, and What I Learned along the Way
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This charming and insightful educational memoir manages to tell us more about what's happening in higher education than could a truckload of educational studies. And Chace does it simply by telling his story.
Leaning toward West Point (a big place that trains warriors and engineers) over Haverford (a small place that focuses on the humanities and nonviolence), he can find no appointment to the academy and so winds up at Haverford. Almost despite himself, he soon becomes awash in the humanities -- and that perhaps makes all the difference.
Feeling his way uncertainly at first and then with more awareness, he moves from graduate school at Berkeley to professorship and young deanship at Stanford. From there he takes on the presidency of Wesleyan (in many ways a disaster zone) and then to preside over -- and admire -- Emory, the multi-purposed and distinguished Atlanta university.
It is a remarkable and instructive journey, and it tells us most when Chace is in the middle of the action, explaining his victories -- and his failures -- in prose both lucid and compelling.
Anyone on his or her way to a college presidency must read this unusual book. everyone entering the world of higher education -- student or parent or teacher -- should read it, those of us interested in seeking truth, a task the university is uniquely suited to do, need to read it.
Chace both honors the university as the best thing civilization has produced and warns us that its best qualities may be slipping away. And he makes clear that such a loss -- no matter our politics, our religions, our passions -- would diminish us all.
This disarmingly candid academic memoir is one rich in detail and long in wisdom. It may be one man's story, but it is one from which all of us should learn.

Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One Review

Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was thinking of giving this just three stars, but after using Vista for a month, the book does seem to be complete and fairly accurate, so I didn't want to ding it too badly.
Now for the bad part. For one, the book is way too big at 750 pages. As someone with a good knowledge of XP and a few days poking around in Vista before I started the book, the "hey, I didn't know that" moments were few and far between. But even for a book aimed at novices this one is too bloated. Just one example, though there are plenty more - most of p. 492 describes six categories of non-system programs. The categories seem to be of the authors making and there's no indication that they are of any practical value, and certainly not when using Vista.
The other issue, minor and understandable but annoying nonetheless is the relentless promoting of Vista. Discussing Media Player, a third of the way through the book, the author says "at the risk of letting this turn into something that sounds like a Microsoft-paid commercial". In my mind it had reached that point on page 1 with the sentence, "Windows Vista is cool." It continued on page after page. I realize this book wasn't intended to be either an exposé or a dry college textbook, and that badmouthing Vista would hardly help the authors book sales, but a little detachment would be nice.
The author's contention (highly suspect to begin with) that the book is designed for users from beginner to advanced doesn't hold up. For a novice user, this is probably a good book. The advanced user should be prepared to wade through 735 pages of dross for their 15 pages of gold.

Amusement Parks of Pennsylvania Review

Amusement Parks of Pennsylvania
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As most roller coaster enthusiasts know, there are very few books that go beyond pretty full-color photographs and into the history of a particular park. It is even more difficult to find information on parks not owned by major corporations (e.g. Disney, Paramount, Vivendi Universal).
Futrell's book captures the unique history of 13 different amusement parks in Pennsylvania. You are given a rare glimpse into these parks that date back to the origins of the American amusement park industry. Having recently visited Kennywood and Idlewild for the first time, I have realized how much of the charm and atmosphere has faded from the latest generation of parks.
Buy this book before the print run ends! You won't regret it.

Pennsylvania is home to many classic amusement parks, several of which began operating as early as the late nineteenth century. Some of these parks maintain rides and amusements from their early years, preserving an atmosphere of nostalgia. Others have evolved with new trends in the industry, adding high-tech rides and water parks. This book begins with a concise history of the amusement park, then surveys the industry in Pennsylvania. A comprehensive guide to 13 parks in the state and a selection of smaller ones, complete with information on rides and attractions, follows. Packed with vintage postcard images and photos.

Taper's Balanchine biography is one of the best books I have ever read! It combines the biographical information with personal accounts and stories that really give you the feeling of getting to know the amazing George Balanchine. Some may have read other books, like Gelsey Kirkland's "Dancing on my Grave", that give a bad impression of Mr. Balanchine, but I promise if you read this book, you will have a change of heart. Although no biography can be completely free of bias, this author describes Mr. Balanchine in a truly honest and real way. I really do feel like I know Mr. Balanchine and I promise that if you read this incredible book, you will too

Written with wit, insight, and candor, Balanchine is a book that will delight lovers of biography as well as those with a special interest in dance. For this edition the author has added a thoughtful yet dramatic account of the working out of Balanchine's legacy, from the making of his controversial will to the present day. The author explores the intriguing legal, financial, and institutional subplots that unfolded after the death of the greatest choreographer of the century, but the central plot of his epilogue is the aesthetic issue: In the absence of their creator, can the ballets retain their wondrous vitality? Taper illuminates the fascinating transmission of Balanchine's masterworks from one generation to another, an unprecented legacy in the history of ballet, that most evanescent of the arts.

Big Book of Windows Hacks Review

Big Book of Windows Hacks

§
Despite Microsoft's claims that their vaunted "focus groups" and client experience consultants have allowed them to offer us painless computing, you and the rest of the world know it isn't true. Waiting for Windows XP or Vista to boot up and shut down certainly are irritations in themselves worth a hack or two.
As you can imagine, this is a large book. That is not just the number of pages (650) but also the format -- of the fold-flat variety. This big book of hacks is easy to work with physically.
The editorial review on this page describes the contents well except that I would alter "contains more than 100 hacks" to "contains almost 200 hacks." Quite a difference.
The writing is clear and informed. I'm sure you have read many of Gralla's magazine contributions over the years. Be sure that the book is not all text. There are plenty of illustrations and even photos (for the hardware hacks) to guide you. The hacks themselves are directed at all versions of Windows, with the focus on XP and Vista.
Consider this book a compendium of all those tips you always rip out of your computer magazine subscriptions to save -- then lose track of. Here they are, all in one place, not easily lost given the size of this book!

Bad Boys of the Black Hills...And Some Wild Women, Too (Bedside Reader Series) Review

Bad Boys of the Black Hills...And Some Wild Women, Too (Bedside Reader Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the attractions of the Wild West is the collection of men and women who explored, settled and 'civilized' those lands. In BAD BOYS OF THE BLACK HILLS...AND SOME WILD WOMEN, TOO, Barbara Fifer chronicles the life and times of many of the outlaws, lawmen, gamblers, merchants, madams, prostitutes, poets, preachers, miners and rowdies who made the Black Hills of the 1880s such a fascinating part of American history.
Fifer's book concentrates on the Deadwood-Cheyenne area. After the 1874 Custer expedition, gold rush fever transformed the area, making Cheyenne and Deadwood boom towns and attracting all forms of humanity. After describing the area's post-Custer development, Fifer offers up vignettes, varying in length, of the assorted men and women who flocked to the area in chapters entitled: 'Law-Abiding Bad Boys;' 'Killers International & Not;' 'Robbers, Rustlers & Plain Old Thieves;' 'Entertainments High & Low,' 'Frail Sisters of the Frontier,' 'Tall-Tale Tellers;' and so on.
Many well-known figures walk the pages of Fifer's book such as Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, George Custer, Sam Bass, the Sundance Kid, Calamity Jane, Nat Love, Buffalo Bill Cody and Ned Buntline. Yet lesser-known figures - Captain Jack Crawford, 'Mother Featherlegs,' Poker Alice Tubbs, Al Swearingen, 'Lame Johnny' Donahue, Boone May, 'Stuttering' Brown and 'Quick Shot' Davis, among others, made their contributions to the history and folklore of the region. Two dozen vintage photographs help bring to life those bad boys and wild women.
Wild West fans will enjoy BAD BOYS OF THE BLACK HILLS...AND SOME WILD WOMEN, TOO. The book offers entertaining snapshots of the famous, infamous and rank-and-file Americans who, once upon a time, made the Black Hills a wild and woolly place. Recommended.

Writing at the End of the World (Pitt Comp Literacy Culture) Review

Writing at the End of the World (Pitt Comp Literacy Culture)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Writing at the End of the World asks hard questions. And suggests balanced and hopeful answers: Richard Miller questions the idea that literature is supposed to be magically "transformative" and gives a model of a slow, gradual process of working towards inner change through the teaching of texts and of reading. This is why I call this book balanced.
Miller's writing is engaging and informative. He draws on stories from historical, cultural, and literary texts. His sustained and engaged attention to his sources is a refreshing model of academic writing in the humanities.
I recommend this book for scholars or teachers in the humanities, particularly of writing or literature. Graduate students who are drawn to the questions he asks will benefit from it (if they have time to read it). Advanced undergraduate students could also benefit from it.

What do the humanities have to offer in the twenty-first century? Are there compelling reasons to go on teaching the literate arts when the schools themselves have become battlefields? Does it make sense to go on writing when the world itself is overrun with books that no one reads? In these simultaneously personal and erudite reflections on the future of higher education, Richard E. Miller moves from the headlines to the classroom, focusing in on how teachers and students alike confront the existential challenge of making life meaningful. In meditating on the violent events that now dominate our daily lives—school shootings, suicide bombings, terrorist attacks, contemporary warfare—Miller prompts a reconsideration of the role that institutions of higher education play in shaping our daily experiences, and asks us to reimagine the humanities as centrally important to the maintenance of a compassionate, secular society. By concentrating on those moments when individuals and institutions meet and violence results, Writing at the End of the World provides the framework that students and teachers require to engage in the work of building a better future.

Race and Politics: Asian Americans, Latinos, and Whites in a Los Angeles Suburb (Asian American Experience)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I came upon the book in an unusual way. I was having dinner with a group of educators and happened to meet the author. Over dinner he talked about some of the issues he came across in his research and I decided to pick up a copy a few days later. I read the book and it surprised me. It was interesting to me because I'm from Hawaii, and the experiences of Asian Americans there, I think, are different, and the text let me experience a major community outside my own. And while I don't see myself as politically driven, I found myself caught up in the alliances/divisions he sees forming in the San Gabriel Valley. As the text examines the theoretical aspects of the politicking in that community, it also presents detailed accounts of actual events that took place during the various stages of grassroots organizing. The depth of the cross-referencing is impressive, but what strikes me most are the insightful, sometimes very personal observations offered to the researcher by participants as events formed --observations that exist almost as sub-themes to the research. He sifts through then traces back lines of political theory through to actual events as residents began to change their community. A worthy read. It has caused me to look at my own community and makes me want to understand more about the forces and processes of change.

Los Angeles: An Architectural Guide Review

Los Angeles: An Architectural Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a great resource for those interested in architecture in Los Angeles, but it has MAJOR problems. Not only are the maps inaccurate about 50% of the time (wrong intersection, wrong place along a street, or just plain wrong), but I have also found several listings for which the street address is wrong, including one for which the wrong street name is given. I have also searched for buildings only to realize that they have been demolished. While Los Angeles has gone through a lot of changes in the last few years, several of the buildings on question were demolished before this edition came out. So if you going to use this book to discover architecturally significant buildings, bring along a good map, a great sense of direction and allow plenty of time, you're going to need all of those to overcome the mistakes made by the authors.

Frommer's Alaska 2009 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's Alaska 2009 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As someone who lives in Alaska, operates a popular Alaska travel website (Alaska.org), and helps people plan custom Alaska vacations, I can confidently say this is the most useful general guidebook to our state. It's more comprehensive, more readable, and more detailed than other Alaska guidebooks.
I think this is mostly because Charles lives in Alaska and updates the book each year. Most travel publishers update their books every couple years and use writers who live in New York or somewhere else. As a result, this book offers details and specifics you learn only by actually doing what you write about--and these are the very details you need to plan your Alaska trip. For example, when writing about halibut fishing in Homer, he mentions the possibility of seasickness. When writing about other activities, he tells you what to bring and wear. Prices and schedules are exact.
Alaska is a complex and unfamiliar destination. Most people don't know where to start when planning a trip. Unfortunately, that's why so many people take a cruise when they might have enjoyed a land tour more--if they only knew how to plan it. That's where the "Planning A Trip" section comes in. It discusses the various travel styles and trip types possible in Alaska and why you would choose one over another.
It contains the kind of insight and authority that come from really knowing a destination. Charles writes, for example, "Studies by Alaska tourism experts have found that many people choose escorted packages to avoid risks that don't really exist." Or, "It's also possible for an independent traveler to obtain some of the predictability a package tour provides. You can reserve accommodations and activities and control your expenses by using a good travel agent experienced in Alaska travel." This is the type of authoritative, insider advice you need to plan a successful Alaska vacation.
This book seems to improve each year--I think because the author maintains a website for reader questions and incorporates the answers into subsequent editions. For example, the book has a section on Suggested Itineraries for trips of different lengths, for family trips, for winter trips, etc.. Itineraries are hugely helpful, because even if you know where you want to go and what you want to see in Alaska, it's sometimes really hard to figure out how long to spend in each place and how best to get from one to the next in a state with limited transportation infrastructure.
In response to reader questions about inaccurate Mapquest information, Charles added a driving times table which sets the record straight on how long it takes to travel the various rural Alaska highways, how fast you can drive, where the best views are, and where you can get gas. Another really useful section is Charles' "Best of Alaska" list. Alaska is so vast, with so many travel options, that this section helps you cut to the chase if know your primary interests.
Two other things separate this book from others. First, it's written from the perspective of someone who seeks out unique and different Alaska travel experiences. Charles writes, "The mistake some people make is to focus only on the largest and most famous destinations." Accordingly, he gives quick coverage to the big attractions you can learn about online or anywhere else and instead gives more coverage to unusual, off-the-beaten finds. Examples include describing a hike near Seward to an old military fort where you can explore underground with flashlights, or explaining how to hook up with a local guide on in Barrow to go polar bear viewing on a Humvee. You won't get these ideas from other guidebooks--and they'll probably end up being your most memorable Alaska travel experiences.
The other thing that differentiates this book is how readable it is. Unlike most travel writers, Charles is a serious author with other non-fiction, non-travel titles to his name. His literary writing style is interesting and fun to read.
I don't really have any criticisms of the book. In fact, if the truth be told, it was Charles' authoritative, honest approach that inspired me when I wrote my own Alaska.org travel planning website. Even today, we keep a copy in our Anchorage travel agency call center for our agents to refer to when helping visitors plan trips to remote parts of the state the agent may not have personally visited.
