We looked at dozens of TV stands before settling on this one; I must admit, I was a bit nervous, as this unit was towards the low end of the price range. I am VERY pleased by the quality.
With one exception (more on that later), the engineering was perfect - the pieces fit together well, holes lined up perfectly, etc. It's a mix of particleboard veneer and real wood, but don't let that fool you - it's a very solid, sturdy piece of furniture with a flawless finish. I'm sitting four feet away from it right now, and can't see anything suggesting it ISN'T a $600+ solid-wood TV stand from the expensive furniture store.
The unit is shipped in one large, HEAVY box; a reasonably strong person can drag it, but you'll probably want help (or a hand truck) if you want to actually carry it from one room to another. Inside the box, every piece is thoroughly protected, with most wrapped in a sort of plastic foam / film and with blocks & sheets of styrofoam around and between everything. I've never seen so much styrofoam. Every piece of wood seemed to have a fine layer of dust on it, resembling fiberglass dust, which was weird; we just wiped down each piece with a damp rag as we moved through the process, so that was no big deal.
Assembling it took something like an hour, with my dad helping. Some of the pieces are a little awkward for one person; it could be done, but having a helper makes it easy & fast. You'll want to assemble it either on carpet (vacuum first) or on a big piece of cardboard, such as the box it came in, to avoid scratching the pieces while you assemble it.
Another reviewer mentioned the holes on the back weren't pre-drilled. That's true, for the holes where the screws go into particleboard; pilot holes for such tiny screws really aren't necessary and might weaken those screws' holding power. It's really not a problem anyway. The screws are small & sharp; just set each in place, and give it a good firm push with the screwdriver to set the point into the wood before you start twisting it in.
The instructions are fairly clear, given the fact they are almost entirely graphical with really no words whatsoever. A few details are tricky, but generally it was no problem. The directions for adjusting the door hinges are not very helpful and could be refined.
The only trouble we had at all was with the doors & hinges. The screw holes on my particular unit were ever so slightly misaligned, which made the hinges hard to attach to the body and caused the doors to drag along the bottom. The hinges allow for several adjustments, although as I said the instructions for those adjustments could be better; we fooled with it for a while and worked out a way to get the doors aligned reasonably well, not quite perfect but unless you're actually looking for it, it really isn't noticeable.
I have a 46" TV on top of it, and it looks great; a 50-inch would probably work too, but I don't think I'd go beyond that. The shelves are fairly deep, plenty deep enough for any electronic components you might care to install. Learn from my mistake, though, and don't go short on the cables (e.g. HDMI cables). The deep shelves eat up a lot of length when you go out the back of the cabinet and back in to a component on another shelf. The three-foot cables I bought aren't nearly long enough; I need to order some four- or five-footers. Overall, I'm very, very pleased. The overall quality is excellent anyway, and even better when you consider the low price. I'd recommend this to anyone.
