Ronald L. Burdick and Margaret L. Baughman, Historic Photos of Cleveland (Turner Publishing, 2007)
How does one review a book entitled Historic Photos of Cleveland? The title is about as informative as it gets; this is two hundred pages of historic photographs of, well, Cleveland. If the subject interests you, you'll want a copy of this. You don't need me to tell you that.
There are two things I noticed that might be of interest to the prospective buyer, however. First, and I note this because I've been spoiled for good by Margaret Wagner's The American Civil War: 365 Days from the Library of Congress, is that the amount of framing text in the book can best be described as "minimal". If you're looking for a book that's truly photo-heavy, with only the barest descriptions of the photos and very little background information, this one's for you. Secondly, and I'm not sure if this is true in the final printing (I'm not sure if I got a finished copy or a bound galley), about ten pages towards the end of the book (the final few photographs and the first page or two of notes) repeat.
The photos themselves, however, are wonderful. If you're interested in the history of Cleveland, you'll find what you're looking for here. ***
