They are everyday people from every walk of life and from every imaginable profession. Judith Lewis Herman, M.D. in her book "Trauma and Recovery" exposes the universal desire to hear, see, and speak no evil. The problem with that desire is that it leaves us unequipped to recognize evil in our presence. Sociopaths have a mask which is used to fool others and to make themselves, on the surface, look like they are good people. In intimate relationships, sociopaths are exposed for who they really are. They are unable to emotionally bond with others even with their own children. They use and abuse children and other people in order to gain power, control, sex, and material goods. They are pathological liars who have no conscience about being hurtful, deceitful and manipulative. They are a shell of a human being, they lack empathy, and they seek no treatment for their disorder.
Our culture often blames the victim rather than holding sociopaths accountable. This is because we don't want to believe in true evil and because we all think that we cannot be conned. Being conned can happen to anyone especially as long as we stay ignorant of the realities of this personality disorder and the devastation it causes. Love Fraud tells two parallel stories. The first is the outrageous true story of Donna Andersen's marriage to a sociopathic con artist, James Alwyn Montgomery, originally of Sydney, Australia. Montgomery took a quarter-million dollars from her, cheated with at least six women during a two-and-a-half-year relationship, had a child with one of them, and ten days after Andersen left him, married the mother of the child. It was the second time he committed bigamy. The second story is about Andersen's personal spiritual journey.
