The Theater Essays Of Arthur Miller Review

The Theater Essays Of Arthur Miller

These collected essays, first published in such periodicals as The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune, or Atlantic Monthly, trace the origins of modern drama in Greek tragedy and comedy. At least four of them should be required reading in any introductory course in British and American literature: The Salesman Has A Birthday; Tragedy And The Common Man; The Nature Of Tragedy; and The Family In Modern Drama. The last of these contains a memorable phrase that furnished the title of the selection of the late U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl's essays, At Home In The World. One brief quotation from Tragedy And The Common Man that seems especially relevant to the present era will suffice: "The Greeks could probe the very heavenly origin of their ways and return to confirm the rightness of laws."

I was given a copy of this wonderful book by one of my event vendors. I quickly ordered a few more copies for co-workers. This has to be the best event design book available and I feel like it was written for me personally. I have been hiring companies to produce my events for over a decade and have picked up a lot of lingo along the way. But this book finally explains the why and how for my events. Excellent excellent resource for event planners. And I think my vendors and I will be speaking the same language now. That is if I can memorize everything in the book. I highly recommend this book!

Broadway: The American Musical Review

Broadway: The American Musical
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was in Barnes and Noble and had watched Broadway the American Musical the week before, I saw this on the shelf and started leafing through it. Before long I had to take the thing home.
I took it to the counter and the lady asked if it was a gift for somebody I knew, and I said "Heavens No!, this is for me!" She asked if I was going to go see The Phantom of the Opera (the movie) when it came to theaters, and I said "Are you kidding me?! of course" and because she was a Broadway buff too, we had a wonderful little conversation about our enduring love for musicals, it was "Loverly" to say the least.
Now about this stunning book.
Each chapter contains all of the following-
1. A Spotlight on a musical that revolutionized theater in some way, or defined the times in which it was created. The surounding shows are described, and their beloved artist as well.
2. Handfulls of biographies on the directors, producers, writers, composers, performers, and stars, that were most influential in their time on the Broadway stage.
3. Excerpts from some of the most popular songs or influential show scripts are included.
4. Pages of archives filled with commentary by artists on other artists, on choreographers, directors, producers, writers, and so on.
5. To top it all off! Each chapter is filled to the brim with pictures from the shows, and artist, that shaped Broadway, and revolutionized musical theater until the year of Wicked and Avenue Q.
There is a beautiful page called EXIT MUSIC which closes the book, leaving any Broadway fan in tears, I myself was no exception.
I did notice that, for the most part, the musicals that got more attention were not the ones that made lots of money, they were the shows that were more influential in changing the content of musical theater, as a result of this Stephen Sondheim gets more attention than say, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who caters more to popular music.
The latter parts of the book do talk a lot about Cameron Mackintosh's influence of helping to move Broadway into the modern world of business.
The Gay influence is talked about some, in the small section on La Cage Aux Folles, although it is not capitalized on.
There is one thing that really thrills me about this book. We know from experience, with few exceptions, that movie musicals slaughter their Broadway roots.
Some examples of film musicals of which Broadway fans disagree with their film adaptions are.
Damn Yankees, On the Town, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, Camelot, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Mame, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Sound of Music, Annie, Evita, Chicago, and yes, The Phantom of the Opera.
Despite the dazzle of movie sets, filming, costumes, and even dances, these films have either featured stars who were not suitable to their roles, (this is embarrassingly true in certain cases, might I mention Camelot), or did not feature the complete score(A Funny Thing...), or the score was cut to pieces to feature other less worthy songs (Damn Yankees). Either way, in all the movie musicals above, changes were made, either songs were cut, or original stars were removed, but in this book we are back to the original versions of each musical, where the scores are complete, where Julie Andrews plays Eliza (My Fair Lady) and Guenevere (Camelot), where Michael Crawford is the Phantom of the Opera, among other legendary performers that films cannot push into the shadows. I think it is fabulous that there is a record of these great stage performances, accompanied by color rich photographs and commentary, justice has been served.
In the back of the book is a map of Broadway in 1928, and a map of the current Broadway next to it.
The other great thing in the back of the book is that there are lists of musicals season by season, the ones that won Tony for best musical are highlighted in red, to show what has been going on in Broadway.
There is a memorial page for Al Hirschfeld, who passed away a year or so ago.
Four pages are dedicated to the 9/11 victims; two of these pages are a double page spread of 42nd street with some of Broadway's greatest stars and complete casts showing their affection for the "Great White Way" after the 9/11 tragedy.
There is a section on The Producers, Miss Saigon, Wicked, Rent, The Lion King, Les Mise'rables, Aida, not to mention the beginning years of this entertainment capital.
Everything I can possibly think of is in here.
If there is any Broadway book to own,
look no further,
THIS IS IT.

Bell'O WAVS-341 Bent Wood Audio Video Cabinet (Espresso Finish) Review

Bell'O WAVS-341 Bent Wood Audio Video Cabinet (Espresso Finish)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When was the last time you bought something, and found it to be much better than you would have expected? Here's your chance. The Bell'o WAVS-341 is a beautifully constructed example of function, style and craftsmanship of a quality that is hard to find at any price. I recommend this unit and the Bell'o brand wholeheartedly, and suggest that anyone who has been disappointed at the quality or aesthetics of the typical box-store television stand give Bell'o a good look. Add to this the fact that you can easily pay more for an unattractive, disposable-quality stand, and this piece is an amazing value.
We picked the Bell'o WAVS-341 television stand after an exhaustive online and brick-and-mortar search for a well-made, solid cabinet with clean lines and a bit of style. After perusing cheap particle board junk at a well-known Swedish furniture outlet we normally like and $1,800 particle board junk in the local department store, and finding nothing that even seemed functional, we found the Bell'o line on the Internet and were immediately impressed.
We liked the solid wood construction and the mid-century modern look of the bent wood frame and legs of the WAVS-341, and found the lowest price by about $100 here on Amazon. We ordered it, and it has exceeded our highest expectations.
The unit came packed beautifully in a large *heavy* box and arrived in perfect condition. As mentioned,it's a big heavy thing (something like 180 lbs.) that FedEx brought to my door using a pallet and pallet jack, so expect to need some help getting inside, or open the box where it is and carry the individual pieces inside.
Assembly took some time and some care, and really requires two people due to some complexity in aligning everything when assembling the bent wood pieces. I managed it on my own, but was lucky not to bung up the finish. However, all of the necessary hardware was included and impeccably labeled, and the directions were crystal clear and easy to follow. Once completed, the table felt like the most solid piece of furniture you could wish for. Everything aligns precisely and locks firmly into place. The only tools I needed were a screwdriver and the Allen wrench included in the package. I used a palm-sized electric screwdriver that also has Allen screw bits that sped things up considerably.
In putting the unit together, you notice first-rate details, like the rotating cams that lock the back panel firmly into place. Even the little monogramed "Bell'o" medallion that is normally out of sight is beautiful and clearly well-made. The cord organization system is simple, consisting of slots in the back panel and two flexible cable keepers that attach to the back of the unit, but it works well and keeps things neat. Bear in mind that this unit is close to the ground, so despite its excellent design, you will have stoop a bit to get all your cords and wires sorted out.
Our 52" LCD television weighs 67 pounds, and does not cause the slightest visible flex in the top shelf of the unit, which I believe is rated at 120 pounds. It looks absolutely great, its rich veneered wood gleaming sleekly but unostentatiously beneath the television. The tv and the new stand looked so good that we felt the need to paint and decorate the living room a little better just to keep up.
As for the price, once you start looking, you realize that 1) you almost can't find anything this beautiful and well-made in a store to start with, and 2) if you can, it's likely to cost much more. I recently saw something similar, but unquestionably less beautiful, in a Scandanavian / modern type furniture store for almost twice the price. Department stores are worse, and will happily charge you two thousand dollars for anonymously styled particle board.
I don't write a lot of reviews on items I buy from Amazon -- and I don't generally gush like this over consumer purchases. But in this case, I was amazed at how difficult it was to find a decent, functional, well-made example of a product that most Americans need, and for that matter, it's difficult to find ANY furniture that is built right out of quality materials, looks good, functions well, and doesn't cost several thousand dollars.
Bell'o not only covers that in spades, but has that even more hard-to-find quality -- the feeling that someone actually designed and built this item with pride, and with a determination to do a good job. And with *artistry*. Style. Taste. Craftsmanship. These words don't apply to many things the average person can buy anymore. I wish these guys made regular household furniture, because I'd buy a houseful of it. I'd like to shake the hand of the man or woman who designed and built this thing, and then agreed to sell it for such a reasonable price. In lieu of that, I offer my humble five-star review of the "Bell'o WAVS-341."

Techcraft HBL52 52-Inch Wide TV Stand (Black) Review

Techcraft HBL52 52-Inch Wide TV Stand (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As most other people commented, this is an excellent stand, very sturdy, very classy looking. Easy assembly, maybe 30-40 minutes. Before I bought this, I could not find any info on the clearance of the shelfs; I have a high end receiver (Sony STR-DG720) that is about 6.25 inches high, and it wasn't clear to me if that would fit in any of the shelves on this stand. So here is some info on shelf heights and clearance: on the bottom shelf, you can fit anything up to 5.25 inches in height, which is more than enough for DVD player, PS2, PS3, etc., but not a high end receiver. The shelf above has more clearance; units up to 6.5 inches high slide easily in from the front (or back), so my Sony Receiver fits in nicely. Since the glass above (which the TV stands on) is supported by "domed" metal beams, you actually have up to 8.5 inches of height, if you slide any unit onto that shelf from the sides. This is because the metal frames the whole unit stand on cover a little bit of the total height of the second shelf at the front and back, but not on the sides. I actually was almost able to put my center speaker bar on top of my tall receiver on this shelf when sliding it in from the side, there was just a tenth of an inch or so height missing to do that. But since there is so much horizontal space on both shelves anyway, that was not needed (one can easily fit three components side by side on each shelf). So in summary, there is more than enough height on the second shelf for tall electronic units like high end receivers. Hope this is helpful!

Techcraft BAY4828 48-Inch Wide Hi-Boy (Walnut) Review

Techcraft BAY4828 48-Inch Wide Hi-Boy (Walnut)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife wanted a TV stand that looked like "real furniture" and I needed something strong enough and deep enough to hold my big Pioneer receiver. After much searching we settled on the Techcraft BAY4828. The product is a mix of laminated fiberboard with a few pieces of laminated wood where it's needed such as with the top TV stand part. The door hinges are solid and the glass on the doors is tempered. The one we received is a fair amount darker than the pictures but luckily it still fits nicely in with the room and our other furniture. Overall assembly was easy and took about 2 hours. I've put together quite a few of these "IKEA" like build your own things and this one went together a bit easier than most. One flaw with the instructions was with how the hinges and doors fit in. I spent quite a bit of time looking for some non-existent pieces. Luckily the screw holes for the hinges were clearly marked so I just screwed them in. Everything lined up and it works fine. Overall the instructions were fairly easy to follow.
Pros:
Easy to build
Deep enough for stereo components
Strong enough to hold heavy components
Decent looks
Great value
Cons:
Instructions could be better
Actual color is darker than picture

Techcraft CRE48B Credenza for Most 50-Inch and Smaller Flat Panel Televisions Review

Techcraft CRE48B Credenza for Most 50-Inch and Smaller Flat Panel Televisions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In researching my purchase of an inexpensive TV console, the most common complaints I read of were of items damaged in transit and of materials that were incorrectly made in the factory (pre-drilled holes not lining up correctly, missing screws, etc).
I am happy to say that my Techcraft CRE48B console had neither of these problems. It was delivered in a box that was sturdy, with exterior corner protection, and everything inside it was very well packed and protected by Styrofoam and sheets of plastic.
The exterior pieces are quite heavy and have a beautiful glossy smooth black finish which is flawless. The interior pieces are made of a lighter but sturdy particle board painted a mat black. The glass is tempered and clear and was fit perfectly in the doors. The back cover is very sturdy compressed cardboard with large openings for all the cords to fit though, and attaches with screws, not nails. I should note there is a fifth leg which projects from the middle near the back of the unit which is not visible in the product image.
It took me about 2 hours to put it together by myself, working very carefully. There were no missing pieces (and no extra pieces). The instructions are mostly images only, but all the larger pieces are labeled with stickers and the smaller pieces are represented with 1:1 scale drawings. I had no difficulty understanding the directions. Assembly requires a Phillips screwdriver (smaller and larger heads). Everything fit together just right and when complete it feels very solid.
Overall I am very pleased with this item, I consider it to be a very good value. The only issue I have with it is that even after adjustment, one door is just a tiny bit off level, but that's a flaw I'm willing to accept in an item in this price range.
