A handy guide with some very detailed information.
Plenty of ideas for days out as well as where to eat, how expensive etc.
Comes with a folded map - which is really not detailed enough, you will need an up to date road map.(Irish roads/signs are notoriously confusing.)
I read through the areas I was interested in & took this guide with me to Ireland as a reference point.
It's a bit bulky and heavy but is full of useful info for the traveler.

For the City: Proclaiming and Living Out the Gospel (Exponential Series) Review

For the City: Proclaiming and Living Out the Gospel (Exponential Series)
Average Reviews:

A healthy church is not just a preaching church or a hub for social justice; a God-honouring gospel-loving church is one where the Word of God is the primary motivator for doing the work of God, according to Darrin Patrick and Matt Carter in this book. The book tells the stories of Matt's The Austin Stone church in Texas, and Darrin's The Journey church in St Louis, Missouri.
Matt's first experience of Austin involved a drive-by shooting and a street brawl, but his friend Chris Tomlin talked him into starting a church there. It was to be a church for the city, in the urban centre of Austin. Attenders are organized into missional communities rather than traditional small groups. The For The City Network helps to co-ordinate the good work already being done by non-profit organizations and deploys people from the church to help the activities of those organizations.
Darrin's desire to plant a church grew out of the frustration of not being able to find a church that would connect with his athletic friends or his girlfriend's artistic friends. He arrived in St Louis in 2001 to plant The Journey, welcomed by gunshots and his car being stolen. The church has three main ministries for serving the city: a community development ministry called Mission: St Louis, a ministry aimed at repairing the church's relationship with artists called The Luminary Center, and a Christian counselling ministry called Karis House.
Both authors are gifted writers, and I found the relatively short book highly engaging throughout. The authors' failures are mentioned alongside their successes, helping the reader to believe that planting a gospel-centred mission-focused church for the city really is possible, and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. I highly recommend the book to all church leaders.

Within ten years, nine out of ten people will claim 'no religious affiliation.' Many of these people will live in urban areas. Church leaders must learn how to effectively engage in ministry with this urban core, a group that includes both the poor and marginalized as well as the wealthy and influential. This book will guide readers in developing a philosophy of ministry that can lead to restoration and renewal in their city.Matt Carter and Darrin Patrick explain the biblical, theological, and historical foundations of ministry within the urban core and how to plant churches where the gospel is not only faithfully preached and shared but also brings substantial benefits to those living in the community. For the City relates the wisdom gleaned from years of serving their cities for the sake of God's kingdom. Carter and Patrick practically equip church leaders and Christians to look at their city as a mission field where individuals and churches can faithfully proclaim the gospel and live out the reality of a community changed and transformed by its message.

How to Move to Canada: A Primer for Americans Review

How to Move to Canada: A Primer for Americans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book doesn't pull any punches - you are leaving the United States and moving to another country - an action not to be taken lightly at all. Whether entering our friendly neighbors to the north as just a permanent resident or going all the way and becoming a Canadian citizen (Note! You don't have to give up your US citizenship!)- it's a lot more complicated than just arriving, buying a house, and starting your new job that you've previously located and landed. Interesting sidebar segments on those who have gone before and what they did - or wished they had done - to make the move and transition easier and less stressful.
Yes you can "retire" to Canada - you just have to loan the government $400,000 (CD) interest free for 61 months and have total assets of greater than $800,000 (CD) when you enter and before the loan. No more just showing up with your retirement nest egg.

Organizing For Dummies Review

Organizing For Dummies
Average Reviews:

I bought this book as a sort of gag for a friend who keeps claiming that he wants to get organized. On the way home I started flipping through it and ended up keeping it for myself. It came along just in the nick of time for my move to a new home. All my life I have been a clutter queen; now I can actually part with things I don't need and showcase the things I really like. My home and work environments are much more functional and enjoyable places to be. It's been several months since I picked the book up and I'm impressed by how much it helped me develop the skills to stick to my promise to get my act together!

What's the favorite four-letter word of people who are less than fully organized? "Help!" So many technological, social, and economic changes affect your life that you need organization just to keep up, let alone advance. Many people have two jobs – one at the office and one taking care of things at home. If you have a family, you may count that as a third job. Caring for elderly relatives or have community commitments? You can count off four, five, and keep right on going.
No matter what life stage you're in, getting organized can make every day better and help you achieve your long-term goals. Organizing For Dummies is for anyone who wants to
Polish his or her professional reputation
Experience less stress
Increase productivity
Build better relationships
Maximize personal time

Organization isn't inherited. With the human genome decoded, the evidence is clear: DNA strings dedicated to putting things into place and managing your time like a pro are nonexistent. Instead, organization is a learned skill set. Organizing For Dummies helps you gain that skill with topics such as:
Understanding how clutter costs you in time, money, and health
Training your mind to be organized and developing a plan
Cleaning house, room by room, from basement to attic (including the garage)
Creating functional space for efficiency and storage
Time-management strategies for home, office, and tavel
Scheduling, delegating, and multitasking
Making time for your family
Managing your health – physical and financial
Finding time for love
Organizing and cashing in on a great garage sale

Getting organized is about unstuffing your life, clearing out the dead weight in places from your closet to your calendar to your computer, and then installing systems that keep the good stuff in its place. Organizing is a liberating and enlightening experience that can enhance your effectiveness and lessen your stress every day – and it's all yours simply for saying "No" to clutter.

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Furniture and Cabinet Construction Review

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Furniture and Cabinet Construction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Through my work as a public librarian I recently ordered this book, and subsequently had the opportunity to be the first at my library to read it! I am very impressed with the sheer scope of the work. Having long been a fan of the Taunton Press I expected this work to be very good quality, and I was not disappointed. I agree with most of the favorable comments made by other reviewers, but I have to disagree with the claim made by another that this book is disjointed. I found it to be very readable and informative.
To me the beauty of this book is that there is something in it for everyone. Beginners will of course gather the most new knowledge here, but even seasoned woodworkers (and woodworking book junkies) will find it interesting and above all useful. Besides the grand scope of the book, I was impressed most with the fresh and creative ways that common woodworking knowledge is presented. I found that the way the chapters were laid out, the order of presentation, felt very natuaral. Each subject flows nicely into the next. I particularly liked the sections illustrating the most common forms of a particular component of woodworking. Such as, the most common methods for mounting and fitting drawers and doors, the most common edge details for shelving, the most common dimensions for various categories of furniture, etc.
If I had to sum up why this book is a great buy I would have to say it is because this book serves as both an encyclopedia of woodworking facts (usefull to all woodworkers among us) and a comprehensive collection of tips and advice (which novices will find especially helpful). I highly recommend this purchase.

Essentials of Supply Chain Management (Essentials Series) Review

Essentials of Supply Chain Management (Essentials Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a consultant in this area, I have recommended this book to my clients. This well-structured, easy-to-read book is an excellent introduction to concepts of Supply Chain Management. Its target audience, executives who must learn about supply chain in order to make strategic decisions, could be expanded to include any person who wants or needs to learn about supply chain. I highly recommend it as a first book for any project manager who is new to this are.
The book contains 8 chapters, each with a similar structure: a list of the learning and performance objectives of preceding the actual content, which is presented in a logical and interesting way. The content is accompanied by helpful diagrams and a series of examples or case studies labeled "Executive Insight" or "In the Real World". It also contains lists of helpful "Tips and Techniques".
The author begins with an overview of the general concepts of Supply Chain Management. One of the objectives of this chapter is to be able to "Start an intelligent conversation about supply chain management issues in your company" It is a tall order, and the author succeeds, introducing the neophyte to the basic concepts of Production, Inventory, Location, Transportation and Inventory with clear and concise prose. In a very interesting example, Hugos uses the story of Alexander the Great to illustrate how a good supply chain functions.
The following 4 chapters systematically cover the basics of supply chain: Planning and Sourcing, Making and Delivering, Coordination and Technology and Supply Chain Metrics. Each of these chapters takes up the fundamental concepts involved and explains them in a simple and understandable fashion. For those that are reading this book as an introduction to supply chain, there will be many an "aha"of understanding as you read along. Of particular interest for the IT project manager, Hugos explains at length what the various technologies are that serve the supply chain.
In the final 2 chapters the author assists the reader in analyzing the type of market(s) that their company targets, and how to determine and plan for a supply chain to succesfully serve them. As well, the chapter includes a number of usefel tools and techniques that can be used to plan out a supply chain project. Most project managers should find this section to be very useful. He closes the book with a look to the future, and uses the concept of "Emergent Behavior" to make predictions about supply chains of the future. He explains how supply chains will develop "Self Adjusting Feedback Loops", using automation to keep information constantly flowing around the loop.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Supply Chain Management. It will be helpful in particular to project managers and IT professionals who want to work in the manufacturing sector. It is well thought out and eminently readable!

Lonely Planet Los Angeles San Diego & Southern California (Regional Travel Guide) Review

Lonely Planet Los Angeles San Diego and Southern California (Regional Travel Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, I was raised in Los Angeles area, and I secretly wanted to know what I missed out on since I left for Alaska. Boy, after going through this book, I see I missed so much, better think about returning soon. This book is well laid out with it's new Top 25 Experiences, itineraries that work for short or long time frames, maps that zero in on what to see in a truly large area. The Understanding SoCal is written for anyone, for me who is an X, or someone going for a first visit, well written!
Lonely Planet puts out guides for regular people, meaning I think anyone can get into a guide, learn with they want, and get busy enjoying. And since I got the soft bound version, it's a size that really fits under your arm to be carried, yet, not too big, or I could have opted for digital chapters for my iPhone or iPad device, those work well too. I like maps that keep me where I'm going. I use a rental car gps, but I still want to know on a bigger scale the area, what sights I'm after, and this book was perfect, for they could go to areas - like Palm Springs & the Deserts, Santa Barbara, and give detailed suggestions, San Diego's Balboa Park - home to museums, parks, and nearby places to stay or eat, well done. The book shows what's FREE, what's a Top Choice, the map of that area was right on. I just went there a few months ago, and boy, I wish I'd had this book with me! The Survival Guide aspect, really helps get you into the proper head space, meaning understanding the locals, their mind set.
Because architecture and culture are gaining in popularity in the area, I went through the author's suggested ideas as Must See's, and again, right on the money. So interested in Post Modernism @ the 1997 Getty Center created by Meier or the Getty Villa, a recreation of an Italian villa in Malibu, it talks about it. The coverage of festivals, there are so many, from the awesome Festival of the Swallows or also known as Fiesta de la Golondrinas with website link included. This is a thinking person's guide, when I anticipated a question, it was answered most of the time. I think you'll use this book, not just put it on a shelf, and want to share it with friends also traveling to Southern California.
Want to visit Disneyland, the guide is thorough in it's multi-page planner with many insights that will save the visitor time and money, and cranky kids. Since the authors know it's a popular site, they created a special trip planner. Helpful information for your cell phone, websites of local interest, or even where to spot a celebrity is there. Amazing breadth of information for the reader. Take Santa Monica, maps, suggested places to go the best beaches, eat, walk, bike, bike rentals, stay by area and price, rated by real people, excellent. I can't wait to try so many new places since our last visit, that's what I am attempting to convey, the book really sets the stage for a well planned trip, Lonely Planet pays for the places it reviews, no freebies, no pay for a review stuff, and you get good quality advice you can count on. Thanks!

The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney Review

The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you were thinking of passing by The Animated Man in favor of Neal Gabler's biography of Walt Disney, think again. "...Complete access to the Disney archives..." notwithstanding, Gabler couldn't in many, many cases, figure out just what exactly to do with all the information he was supposedly buried in for five+ years. And as such, the reader comes away at times with more questions than answers about just who Walt Disney was.
This is not the case in Michael Barrier's fine biography of Walt Disney, The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney. Although he may not have had the unfettered access to the Disney archives accorded Neal Gabler, one would hardly be aware of that particular handicap. He was able to utilize a great deal of information housed there, which along with interview after interview makes for a mighty informative read. And since many of the interviews utilized throughout the book date back over 30 years, Barrier was able to talk with many Disney employees who "were there" at or near the start of Walt Disney's impact on the world.
So many of the interviews captured by Barrier provide an insight into what made Walt Disney `tick' that simply don't exist from the materials Gabler was able to unearth. More than once while reading through The Animated Man did I stop to re-read a paragraph as a particular tidbit of information provided an "a-ha" moment, helping to fill in some blanks pertaining to either Walt Disney himself or the legacy he left behind.
Also, Michael Barrier was able to weave his knowledge of animation throughout the text, providing additional insights not available to authors with less refined skills in that area.
In spite of it being half the length of Gabler's tome, I feel most readers will come away feeling more than fulfilled with few asking for more as Barrier's raison d'ĂȘtre of the book is his pinpoint focus on Walt Disney and what really made him tick.
As has been stated many times, and is still true today: the definitive Disney biography has yet (if ever) to be written, but Barrier comes as close as anyone has to date. There are plenty of books about Walt Disney and the Walt Disney Company to keep most of us glued to our reading glasses for some time to come. And one could round out one's knowledge by continuing on to Gabler's bio or even Bob Thomas' and certainly The "E" Ticket fanzine for very insightful and unique interviews with those who worked with Walt (primarily on the parks) - to name but a few. But I strongly feel the best starting point would be to grab a copy of Michael Barrier's biography and be prepared to be wowed.

Walt Disney (1901-1966) was one of the most significant creative forces of the twentieth century, a man who made a lasting impact on the art of the animated film, the history of American business, and the evolution of twentieth-century American culture. He was both a creative visionary and a dynamic entrepreneur, roles whose demands he often could not reconcile. In his compelling new biography, noted animation historian Michael Barrier avoids the well-traveled paths of previous biographers, who have tended to portray a blemish-free Disney or to indulge in lurid speculation. Instead, he takes the full measure of the man in his many aspects. A consummate storyteller, Barrier describes how Disney transformed himself from Midwestern farm boy to scrambling young businessman to pioneering artist and, finally, to entrepreneur on a grand scale. Barrier describes in absorbing detail how Disney synchronized sound with animation in Steamboat Willie; created in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sympathetic cartoon characters whose appeal rivaled that of the best live-action performers; grasped television's true potential as an unparalleled promotional device; and--not least--parlayed a backyard railroad into the Disneyland juggernaut. Based on decades of painstaking research in the Disney studio's archives and dozens of public and private archives in the United States and Europe, The Animated Man offers freshly documented and illuminating accounts of Disney's childhood and young adulthood in rural Missouri and Kansas City. It sheds new light on such crucial episodes in Disney's life as the devastating 1941 strike at his studio, when his ambitions as artist and entrepreneur first came into serious conflict.Beginning in 1969, two and a half years after Disney's death, Barrier recorded long interviews with more than 150 people who worked alongside Disney, some as early as 1922. Now almost all deceased, only a few were ever interviewed for other books. Barrier juxtaposes Disney's own recollections against the memories of those other players to great effect. What emerges is a portrait of Walt Disney as a flawed but fascinating artist, one whose imaginative leaps allowed him to vault ahead of the competition and produce work that even today commands the attention of audiences worldwide.

WOW! I have a copy of the 1980s version of Rutes and Penner--this is a totally new edition, all new photography, etc.--and consider it the 'Bible' for hotel design. But the new edition is twice as big and full of current examples and information. It has 32 pages of gorgeous color photos of great hotels and resorts from around the world. The text is in three main sections: Hotel Types (downtown, resorts, conference centers, luxury hotels, casino hotels, etc.); Design Guide (planning and design information for all areas of the hotel); and Development Guide (feasibility, programming, future trends). In addition, there are lots of appendices and sidebars from such people as Ian Schrager, I.M. Pei, Robert Stern, and John Portman. I've looked at other hotel design books in the stores and there isn't anything that is so complete or current. There are other books on boutique hotels, with lots of pictures, but nothing with this global coverage of all types of lodging properties. With well over 400 pages, this book will be the new Bible for hotel design. I can't imagine a better choice for anyone involved with the hotel development, architecture, or interior design.

I used an earlier edition, but I would assume they won't differ too much. This was an invaluable resource for our initial wedding planning. We were able to find out ahead of time and w/o phone calls that some sites we were interested in were too small to accomodate our guests. And, then we used it to investigate locations we had never thought of, or knew existed.
I have also used the book as a resource when planning social events for a non-profit association. Again, we narrowed our selections based on size and found locations that we did not know of.
My event planning went much more smoothly because of this book, and I have loaned it to several friends who have also praised its resources.

Media Literacy Review

Media Literacy

This is the assigned book for a class at University and in no way interests me aside from the requirement that I buy it. What does interest me is that the U-Bookstore is selling this same book for almost $80 and it's here for almost half price.
I considered getting the Kindle version, but with the actual book I can sell it to the bookstore and likely get a good chunk of my money back when the class is over. That's the problem with Kindle editions, you're paying close (sometimes even more) to what you would for a new dead tree book, but without the option to sell/trade/gift it when you're finished.
It was shipped quickly through Amazon Student shipping, and was the described/pictured edition.

This book offers a detailed approach to studying media influences and presents readers with a clear vision of what it means to operate at a higher level of media literacy. W. James Potter argues that the media have a profound influence on the way we perceive the world by shaping our beliefs and expectations. By becoming more media literate, we can avoid the potentially negative effects of those media messages as well as amplify the potentially positive effects. With substantial discussion of media content, audiences, and the media industries, the book tackles key issues related to media ownership, invasion of privacy, piracy of media messages, violence, and sports. Readers will gain a clearer perspective on the borders between the real world and the simulated media world and will become more informed and literate media consumers

Under the Big Top: A Season with the Circus Review

Under the Big Top: A Season with the Circus

I just finished Feiler's "Under the Big Top" and my first thought was "I wish I could contact this guy and compare notes." I joined Ringling Brothers on a lark in '82, and his descriptions of travelling with the circus brought back feelings and memories I hadn't had in a long time. From the descriptions of the social fabric (yes, there is a very real class structure) to the smell of the lot where the animals are kept (not unpleasant) to the dangers, and the thrills of watching the performers every night, he has DONE it. If you want to know what it's really like to join the circus, but aren't feeling quite that romantic, read this book.
