Berson gives a lively, very readable history of the collaboration of four major artists to create "West Side Story" and follows with a series of fascinating essays about why, and how, this was such an original work. Finally, she discusses the place of "West Side Story" in American culture, with insightful discussions of the show as a reflection of ethnic tension and youth violence in the mid-20th century, of its connection to "Romeo and Juliet," and of its treatment in film, jazz, and other art forms. There's lots more, and it's all worthwhile. I highly recommend this book to any and all fans of "West Side Story" and of Broadway musicals in general.
