The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip: A Fan's Guide to Major League Stadiums Review

The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip: A Fan's Guide to Major League Stadiums

As an avid reader of baseball books, I am often skeptical of new baseball publications. Baseball books can be tediously academic (it is a game after all, Mr. Will) or, in the case of guide books, short on substance. Other works just seem to repeat the stories and cliches I hear every year during rain delays. When I saw "The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip," I thought it might be another coffee-table book. But it has been a fun, informative read. The book appeals to the historian in me, especially in its efforts to tell about the Negro League and minor league entries in each respective MLB city and in its attempts to document old stadiums. Yet, O'Connell and Pahigian write in a style that is witty and engaging, and wise to the role of trivia in the seamhead's life . I have found myself continually sneaking a quick read at my desk or on the train. (The book is addictive and perfect for summer reading.) Finally, I can recommend this book as a travel guide nearly on par with the "Let's Go" or "Rough Guide" series. I used it on a trip to the Midwest and found it especially useful in less celebrated cities like Milwaukee and St. Louis. It is rare that a book of this type can succeed on so many levels.

The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip is a comprehensive guide to all the diverse and fascinating ballparks throughout the country by two entertaining young writers whose love for the game of baseball and the game of life overflows from each page. Josh Pahigian and Kevin O'Connell's approach to skillfully planning and fully appreciating a road-trip or a visit to a single park is funny and irreverent and loaded with information designed to make the most of the experience.Part travel manual, part ballpark atlas, part baseball history book, part restaurant and city guide, and, not least, part epic narrative, The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip encompasses all the essential elements of a full-blown baseball road-trip. Included are ticket and travel information, a detailed guide to the best and worst seats in each park, folklore and statistics on each park, tips on each park's trademark foods, and profiles of nearby sports bars and baseball attractions, all within a lively narrative that reminds us that baseball is often the ultimate metaphor for the important things in life.

Careers In Art: An Illustrated Guide Review

Careers In Art: An Illustrated Guide
Average Reviews:

This is among the most outstanding and useful books I have encountered on this subject. It is visually appealing (very important for artistic types) and incredibly informative. It covers hundreds of visual arts professions and gives practical advice on which courses to take in college that will give you the necessary background. The information is personalized through a case study format-interviews with people who currently have this job description. One of the biggest questions career seekers have, and one that is not usually addressed in career books is: Which school should I go to? It is not a question that is easily answered because different schools offer different programs. This book provides some of the answers; in the back is a comprehensive chart of schools all over the U.S. and Canada detailing which courses of study they offer within visual arts professions. I wish I had had this book when I was starting my career!

Gurdjieff, A Beginner's Guide: How Changing The Way We React To Misplacing Our Keys Can Transform Our Lives
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have just read Gil Friedman's book, Gurdjieff: A Beginner's Guide and feel that for the first time I have an idea of what Gurdjieff ideas were all about. In the past, I have tried to read books by Gurdjieff himself and gotten very little out of them. Friedman's book has translated Gurdjieff into ordinary English that is both very readable and understandable, and goes through Gurdjieff's ideas in a step-by-step approach that is easy to follow. Friedman writes in a conversational manner and gives many examples from everyday life. How we react to misplacing our keys is just one of them that I found very interesting. One of the most interesting concepts of Gurdjieff that Friedman discusses, and I am now attempting to apply in my life is the concept that any time we want to accomplish something, the First Force, there will be resistance to accomplishing it, the Second Force, and unless we anticipate this Second Force, it is unlikely that we will accomplish our goal because we will give up, not realizing that there was going to be a resistance that we had to overcome to obtain our desired goal. So, now when I want something, I think about what type of resistance I will face in the task itself and from other people. This is also why politicians often make these big promises that they can't fulfill because they never anticipate the resistance to obtaining their goals. There were several other concepts from the book that I have found very useful and feel I can work at applying them in my life.
The chapters of the book are very short, a couple of pages at most, that made it easy to read and the extensive Table of Contents offered me a very good way to find subjects I wanted to go back to. If you have any interest in understanding Gurdjieff's ideas, I would highly recommend this book as a place to start.

2011 Update
Are you ready for self-transformation?Many spiritual teachers promise transformation, but Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff delivers. Gurdjieff (1872-1949) was born in Alexandropol on the border of Russia and Turkey. Gurdjieff's teachings contain many concepts that, taken together are referred to as the Work. The idea behind the Work is that our first birth is our physical body, which is all we need to get through life. But we are capable of developing into something higher, just as an acorn can stay an acorn and die or develop into an Oak Tree, we can develop into something higher. Gurdjieff offers a radically original version of man and his potential for self-development. "Gurdjieff, A Beginner's Guide: How Changing the Way We React To Misplacing Our Keys Can Transform Our Lives" is a beginning guide to the teachings of Gurdjieff. Practical and eminently readable, it leads the reader through some of the main concepts necessary for self-transformation.

Freak Show: Presenting Human Oddities for Amusement and Profit

I have been using Freak Show in my Introduction to Sociology class since it has been published. I find the book to be a great way to introduce students to a qualitative approach to the sociology of deviance. Bogdan's fresh approach to the material makes the experiences of the so-called "freaks" come alive. Discussion that ensues covers the range from the construction of disabilites, how non-white "races" were constructed as "inferior," and the way modern-day "Freak shows" live on in TV-talk shows. I have frequently cast about for a newer supplemental reading to offer my students, but have always come back to Freak Show. And for all you non-professors out there, I recommend the book as a great read!

From 1840 until 1940, freak shows by the hundreds crisscrossed the United States, from the smallest towns to the largest cities, exhibiting their casts of dwarfs, giants, Siamese twins, bearded ladies, savages, snake charmers, fire eaters, and other oddities. By today's standards such displays would be considered cruel and exploitative—the pornography of disability. Yet for one hundred years the freak show was widely accepted as one of America's most popular forms of entertainment.Robert Bogdan's fascinating social history brings to life the world of the freak show and explores the culture that nurtured and, later, abandoned it. In uncovering this neglected chapter of show business, he describes in detail the flimflam artistry behind the shows, the promoters and the audiences, and the gradual evolution of public opinion from awe to embarrassment. Freaks were not born, Bogdan reveals; they were manufactured by the amusement world, usually with the active participation of the freaks themselves. Many of the "human curiosities" found fame and fortune, becoming the celebrities of their time, until the ascent of professional medicine transformed them from marvels into pathological specimans.

What elements constitute a real community, and how is that sense of community changing in the wake of global connections? Timothy Beatley's Native To Nowhere: Sustaining Home And Community In A Global Age uses research and the author's own travels to communities across North America and Europe to examine concepts of place in modern life. Trends which have undermined these roots, new ideas set forth to maintain connections, and descriptions of designs, technological considerations, and new political structures for sustaining these modern ideas of community are all considered in chapters which will appeal to college-level students of social issues as well as concerned general-interest adult readers.

Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics Review

Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics

A friend who said he was reminded of Joan Didion by these essays only made clear to me how much more there is to Solnit: one of the most gifted writers we have, for one thing, who brings to bear sensitivities to political questions, her own personal interactions with the environment, historical and philosophic musings, at the same time researching her topics and presenting pertinent and sometimes obscure facts with a casualness that belies the rigor that must have gone into their research.

Readers new to Solnit might be steered first to her celebrated classic, "River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West," but these essays sacrifice none of the intellectual reach and sweep of that earlier work. Some are slightly dated, as might be predicted from their topicality, but all are well enough written to maintain interest as snippets out of time. I particularly enjoyed one in which, having invited Solnit to visit, Susan Sontag seemed to welcome her "into the republic of literature;" in another, Solnit makes a breathtaking connection between the bikini waxes of Playboy bunnies and clear-cutting in the Sequoia National forest--and makes a pertinent point of it.

I'm not especially driven to read about the ingenious ways rapacious corporations have skirted laws and ethics to plunder the American landscape, still less about our own disregard; but Solnit makes interesting not only those subjects but many others in this volume. Each essay is an example of a wonderful writer plying her craft, a reflective citizen and highly cultivated mind never so self-indulgent as to forego hard information that you've never heard before, historical facts that have been overlooked or suppressed.
I suspect that some of these essays will be classics fifty years hence. In the meantime, enjoy the literary champagne, even as you become better informed citizens of this, our beleaguered planet.

Money and Power: The History of Business Review

Money and Power: The History of Business
Average Reviews:

Frankly, I did not know what to expect as I began to read this book. (The use of "The" in the subtitle is somewhat misleading.) Having read it, I consider this to be among the most enjoyable as well as most informative books about business I have read in recent years. Referring to a collaboration with David Grubin to produce a CNBC documentary, Means explains that "we followed the money to the personalities -- both definitive and representative -- that have dominated the last thousand years of business, and to some of the most defining and colorful events of the millennium." The personalities are Sir Godric, Cosimo de' Medici, Philip II, those involved with "Tulipmania", James Watt and Matthew Boulton, those involved with the Transcontinental Railway, J. Pierpont Morgan, John D.. Rockefeller, Henry Ford, Robert Woodruff, the key players involved in the merger which created Time Warner, and Bill Gates. Here are brief comments by Means on a few of the individuals and situations which are the focus of his attention throughout this book:
"Born at a time when capital accumulation for the peasantry was nearly unthinkable, [Godric] was nonetheless a model of modern wealth creation: an up-from-the-bootstraps capitalist who transformed the hand fate had dealt him."
"Cosimo helped to create a world that revolved not around God but around a society with man at the center. After five hundred years, power was shifting from the men of the Church to the men of business."
"Gifted with unprecedented mineral wealth, [Philip} had set out to reverse the flow of history rather than look forward and embrace growth, and history has judged him accordingly."
"James Watt is known to us as the father of the Industrial Revolution, and indeed the steam engine he brought to such perfection is the [italics] defining invention of the movement....He needed a partner [Boulton] to transform his genius into a product and to bring the product to a market where fortunes were waiting to be made....The steam engine [developed by Watt and promoted by Boulton] that would power the first locomotive would radically alter transportation across England and throughout Europe. Across the ocean, it would even pull a continent together. But its invention and manufacture would be left to other minds and hands."
"Throughout the last millennium, it was control that created fortunes: control over the oceans or railroads, the highways or the airwaves. At the start of the new millennium, it's still control -- this time over cyberspace, the new wealth machine. Some things never change but here's the difference: This road to riches is open to everyone."
I include these brief excerpts to suggest both the style and thrust of Means's presentation of material. As Grubin correctly points out in the Foreword, "Scientists and politicians, artists and scholars, all contributed to the millennium of change, but the world's businessmen -- its bankers and industrialists, merchants and entrepreneurs -- were a powerful driving force behind the stunning transformation." Means is to be commended for so skillfully guiding his reader through this immensely interesting process. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Mokyr's The Lever of Riches.

Alice May: Gilbert & Sullivan's First Prima Donna (Forgotten Stars of the Musical Theatre) Review

Alice May: Gilbert and Sullivan's First Prima Donna (Forgotten Stars of the Musical Theatre)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must start off by admitting that I came into contact with this book only briefly, having been drawn to it by the title, and that was some time ago.
My general impression was that the book was a sound enough piece of work about a nearly forgotten figure of the Victorian-era stage. However, the title of the book, "Alice May: Gilbert & Sullivan's First Prima Donna," is basically misleading.
Alice May performed the part of Aline in G&S's first successful full-length comic opera, "The Sorceror." Aline is a soprano, the romantic lead of the piece, a typical soubrette part. She is definitely not the prima donna of the show. That honor went to the then-most famous player in the cast, Mrs. Howard Paul, who portrayed Lady Sangazure, a mezzo-soprano part and the forerunner of all the series of middle-aged ladies that followed, including Little Buttercup in "H.M.S. Pinafore" and Katisha in "The Mikado." "The Sorceror" also provided starting points for the careers of real Victorian stars George Grossmith and Rutland Barrington, whose quickly growing fame rapidly overshadowed that of Mrs. Paul.
Alice May was not included in the cast of the next G&S show, the international super-hit, "H.M.S. Pinafore," nor in any of the succeeding comic operas.
Far from being G&S's "first prima donna," Alice May did not even rate inclusion in the index of Leslie Baily's magisterial "The Gilbert and Sullivan Book." An engraving of Ms. May as Aline does, however, appear in the book, although without mention of her name. In his autobiography, "A Society Clown," George Grossmith referred to her only as "Miss ------" when he wrote of his first major stage triumph.

This biography tells the story of Alice May, a touring prima donna in the nineteenth century who travelled from England to Australia, New Zealand, India and the US, taking part in pioneering performances of the popular light operas of the day. Along the way she took part in many premieres, including the first production of Gilbert and Sullivan'sThe Sorcerer and the first authorised American production of The Mikado . New format looks good for this old favorite. The 10th edition, published by Rutgers Univ. Press, may be a little milder in its view of NJ outings than previous editions, but the book still has a "voice". There are many new entries, quite a few of the short, factual variety so newcomers to the state should find plenty to do. Earlier editions had better cross-references and indexes, but this one has better driving directions and includes websites for almost all entries.
Out of state entries like th Crayola Factory or Hyde Park are now found at the end of each chapter, so once you get used to this you know where to find them. STill the best alll around guidebook to New Jersey.

And, then there's always the 127 miles of beach along the state's east coast that make perfect day trips for swimming, boating, fishing, and other fun activities.

Pop Goes Korea: Behind the Revolution in Movies, Music, and Internet Culture Review

Pop Goes Korea: Behind the Revolution in Movies, Music, and Internet Culture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For an English language resource, this is a gem of a book. Keeping in mind that Korea has a relatively short (but very interesting) pop culture, this book covers all the bases quite nicely. It features a variety of tidbits and little known facts sprinkled throughout the book.
I applaud the author for pioneering an English language legitimate published text - a fresh break from the bloggers who dominate this field of interest. The information is as up-to-date as a book can be (pub 2008) but a slight out-of-date-ness is to be expected for a text about the ever-changing pop culture. However, since the majority of the book covers the upstarts of each industry, the lack of 2009 material is easily forgiven (and unavoidable).
The author's writing style is both a pro and a con. The writer seems to be comfortable in his knowledge of the subject but sometimes has too much of a conversational tone - almost to a fault of sounding uneducated. However, I really don't want that to sound too harsh because I believe one of his strengths is his ability to both inform and also entertain. He's got a great sense of Western humor that appears amongst this Eastern pop culture history.
I was also disappointed by the lack of photos throughout the book. The beginning has plenty of color pictures to prepare for the in-depth look that's coming ahead but the book itself is lacking accompanying photos. It would have made the biographies of Lee Byung-Hun and Lee Soon-Man more easy to follow.
My biggest complaint is the lack of Korean text. How hard would it have been to include Hanguel in the chapters? All movies, songs, TV dramas, and actors have either transliterated or romanized names which is frustrating when searching for the original source material. The least that could have been done is to include the original Korean names in parenthesis. A careless oversight.
However, I do want to conclude with saying that the author knows his stuff and has written an excellent primer on all things Korean. His background history on the PIFF (Busan International Film Festival) is impressive as is his approach to Korean movies in general (and why there is so much more to the Korean wave than 1999's Shiri). All in all, this book is well worth your time.

"Mr. Russell's book is the first by a non-Korean to explain the rise of Korea's entertainment industries....the book could hardly be more approachable."—Wall Street Journal

"For a country that traditionally received culture, especially from China but also from Japan and the United States, South Korea finds itself at a turning point in its new role as exporter."—The New York Times

From kim chee to kim chic! South Korea came from nowhere in the 1990s to become one of the biggest producers of pop content (movies, music, comic books, TV dramas, online gaming) in Asia—and the West. Why? Who's behind it? Mark James Russell tells an exciting tale of rapid growth and wild success marked by an uncanny knack for moving just one step ahead of changing technologies (such as music downloads and Internet comics) that have created new consumer markets around the world. Among the media pioneers profiled in this book is film director Kang Je-gyu, maker of Korea's first blockbuster film Shiri; Lee Su-man, who went from folk singer to computer programmer to creator of Korea's biggest music label; and Nelson Shin, who rose from North Korea to the top of the animation business. Full of fresh analysis, engaging reportage, and insightful insider anecdotes, Pop Goes Korea explores the hallyu (the Korean Wave) hitting the world's shores in the new century.

Mark James Russell has been living in Korea since 1996. His articles about Korean and Asian cultures have appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, International Herald-Tribune, and many other publications. He is currently the Korea/Japan Bureau Chief for Asian Movie Week magazine.

The Fundamentals of Listing and Selling Commercial Real Estate Review

The Fundamentals of Listing and Selling Commercial Real Estate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There has been no shortage in books on the topic for investors in commercial real estate, unfortunately, it does not seem as if many books have been written about the brokerage aspect of the business. I did a little research before I purchased this one, and have even read a couple that focus on the industry in general.
When I saw "The Fundamentals of Listing and Selling Commercial Real Estate' by Loren Keim, I ordered it immediately. I thought, "finally, a comprehensive resource that I can use to develop a base knowledge of the industry while I continue to learn and grow; this is fantastic!" I even read some of the passages online before I even purchased it, and was thoroughly impressed with its level of sophistication.
What sold me were the other reviews that I read before I ordered. They were all great, and the authors even shared some of the same problems that I had with regards to the other commercial real estate books. They had actually established a common ground with me.
Then I received it and began reading immediately. The level of detail is something I appreciated, but emphasizing every single type of retail opeations almost put me in a coma. Also, the quality of writing left much to be desired. I suddenly became suspicious about the rave reviews that I had read on this very website, and lo and behold, they were all written by people from Pennsylvania, the same area that the author is from. Pure coincidence? I doubt it, because all of the reviews were truly exaggerated.
I did provide three stars, just because of the pure limited availability of books on commercial real estate brokerage. So, if anyone is reading this and is an experienced commercial real estate broker with strong writing ability, there is absolutely an opportunity for you to enter this book niche!
